In 1620 politicians in London and refugees in Leiden organised the voyage of the Mayflower. For trade and toleration not for war and conquest.

It certainly came back far quicker, but nobody knows when it reached home (Rotherhithe), only when it reached England (probably Plymouth).

OTD 6May 1621(Old Style Julian Calendar) was the date Captain John Smith recorded the #Mayflower arrived back in England Christopher Jones, despite his much depleted crew, had made good time on the return, arriving home in less than half the time it had taken to sail to New England

@LondonStone Great pub - but there is no evidence that any pub stood on the riverside in the 16th or even early 17th century, no matter what the brewery claims..!

A pub has stood on this riverside site at Wapping since the 16th century. The previous structure was destroyed by fire in the early 19th century. The new building was called The Prospect of Whitby, said to be named after a collier ship from that town moored nearby.

Some of the crew of the Mayflower also had connections with Deptford, which borders on Rotherhithe. The ship itself was probably berthed near what is now South Dock.

He once rented his house at Deptford to the Russian Tsar. The diarist, horticulturalist, Restoration intellectual and founder-member of the Royal Society John Evelyn died today in 1706 at his London home. Read about Evelyn here thehistoryoflondon.co.uk/john-evelyn-2/

The Huguenots’ contribution to the Mayflower is rarely acknowledged. They helped the Pilgrims survive in Holland; they strongly influenced many of the passengers, including Carver; they set the precedent of separatism; and supplied a modified Calvinism.

February is a good time to plan a visit to the Huguenot Library. The image is a French Hospital bill, one of numerous original documents you can view. The library’s archives contain many items to aid research. To book a visit to the library, email library@huguenotsociety.org.uk

Today in 1619 King James I granted a charter to incorporate the New River Company. The New River was never a river and is no longer new but still brings fresh water into London. Read my article here thehistoryoflondon.co.uk/the-new-river-… or watch my video about it here youtu.be/8BKhbftRoZ8
