Today, Miami Dade College proudly served as a convener for Florida’s Commissioner’s Summit on Campus and School Safety, hosted in collaboration with @StasiKamoutsas and the @EducationFL. K–12 superintendents, college and university presidents, and local and state law enforcement leaders came together to share best practices and strengthen the safe, supportive environments our students deserve. During the summit, @GovRonDeSantis signed HB 757, Florida’s School Safety bill, advancing critical tools and resources to help postsecondary institutions across the state continue strengthening campus safety. At MDC, we believe student success begins with environments where students feel safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Congratulations to Dr. Marie Etienne, a distinguished faculty member at Miami Dade College’s Benjamín León School of Nursing, on receiving the Nurse Award from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. With decades of service in the classroom and across the profession, Dr. Etienne has dedicated her career to preparing the next generation of nursing professionals, shaping leaders in pediatrics, geriatrics, family practice and more. Her commitment to excellence, innovation and service continues to inspire our students and strengthen the future of healthcare.

MDC is hosting Florida Commissioner of Education @StasiKamoutsas this week for the Commissioner’s Summit. Today’s covening of college and university presidents and trustee chairs from across the @FLCollegeSystem and the @SUS_Florida focused on how, together, we’re preparing the talent our state needs to remain competitive in today’s economy. From expanding apprenticeship programs and rapid credentials that connect students to in-demand careers, to strengthening 2+2 pathways that make it easier to start at a college like MDC and finish at a state university, this work is about creating clear, accessible routes to real opportunities and jobs. When we align around these strategies, we’re ensuring that more Floridians are ready to step into high-demand roles and build meaningful careers.

We hosted the Florida State Board of Education this morning at Miami Dade College. Our School of Justice Honor Guard presented the colors, followed by a moving national anthem from Kennedi Duke, a New World School of the Arts student. During the meeting, @StasiKamoutsas , FL's Commissioner of Education, recognized one of our own, Honors College industrial engineering major Felipe Salles Varallo, whose research in biofuels and water quality reflects the kind of real-world learning and leadership our students take on every day. Always good to welcome colleagues from across the state to MDC. We’re grateful for the recognition of our students and the work they’re leading in and outside the classroom.

The MDC Idea Center just kicked off its Summer 2026 Miami Startup Ecosystem Internship Program. This summer, nearly 50 students will step into paid internships and hands-on roles across Miami’s startup and small business scene. At the kickoff, they spent the day getting grounded in the essentials - how to build strong mentorships, navigate networking, and get things done and add real value in a work environment - before heading into a summer working alongside founders and small business owners building right here in Miami. Supported by Blackstone LaunchPad and JPMorganChase, the program has connected nearly 100 students with 50 companies, with more placements on the way, continuing to strengthen the bridge between MDC talent and Miami’s innovation economy.

Every @TheJKCF Scholar has a powerful story behind them, and this year’s MDC Scholars are no exception. As Honors College students, they’ve excelled academically, but what truly sets them apart is their grit. They’re first-generation college students balancing classes, jobs, and family responsibilities, pushing forward because they know education changes everything. Chosen from more than 1,300 applicants nationwide and among just 60 selected, they’ve earned one of the most competitive scholarships in the country, up to $55,000 a year in scholarship to help them complete their undergraduate studies. In the U.S. nearly 80% of community college students aspire to earn a bachelor’s degree but only 16% reach that goal. This scholarship ensures that top students who start at MDC complete their degrees at the nation's top institutions. Each arrived in the U.S. less than four years ago and made the most of their time at MDC, taking on research, mentoring, tutoring, and leadership roles that strengthened our College community. We welcomed the inaugural cohort of the Institute for Freedom of the Americas Fellows Program.   Over the last three days, more than 20 fellows from across Ibero-America engaged with global leaders, local elected officials, entrepreneurs, and community voices, exploring democratic institutions, economic opportunity, and regional challenges.   Their experience included visits to the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora and Miami City Hall, conversations with Cuban and Cuban-American leaders, meetings with mayors from cities across Miami-Dade County, and the inauguration of the Institute’s offices at the Freedom Tower.   Over the next seven months, fellows will participate in a focused academic and policy series examining ethics and transparency, governance, international financial institutions, human rights, and regional integration across the Americas, among others.   As a global city at the crossroads of the Americas, Miami is the right place for this work and, as Democracy's College, MDC is uniquely positioned to educate and prepare the next generation of leaders across the Americas.
