@RobinMBernstein Bc as women age, we fade into irrelevance; we become invisible. It was so wholesome to see a 60 y/o black woman w/ graying hair, sing such a soulful, unflashy song, released over three decades ago(!) & recognize that still, all these years later, she is seen & heard & loved.

@dieworkwear It doesn’t matter what it cost. It matters whatever the aesthetic she was going for was meant to imply. It was meant to *look* extravagant & outside the *norm* (fashion norms in a stuffy, male-dominated space are dumb/harmful but that’s a convo for another day).

interesting that criticisms of MTG's fur-trimmed coat have been limited to aesthetics. there used to be a norm in UK and US public life that political leaders should not wear extravagant things, lest they be thought of as being spendthrifts and irresponsible with public trust

I’ve read heartbreaking books about 9/11 but the piece of writing my brain recalls every year is the bizarre first-person account of the Toronto Star writer who happened to be in New York when the towers came down. Unfortunately for the Star, that person was their fashion editor.
