I had two and a half years in college in the school of engineering at Pitt. My draft number was 12, student deferments were cancelled and I went in the last load of draftees. Just like that before finals. I didn’t kick about it. I served. It was my duty and the law. I’m sure you don’t want your male children serving 20 at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. Elected or not, you will not change that law.

I started a small salsa company because I wanted the flexibility to care for my child. It was rewarding to be my own boss and see my hard work on shelves all over New Mexico. We must harness our people’s entrepreneurial spirit, strengths, and potential to make it possible for homegrown ideas to open opportunities for our families. That’s why I’ll launch an Office of Small Business to coordinate development programs, fill the gaps created by Trump’s funding cuts, and provide an online clearinghouse for grants, capital, and other resources to help businesses get off the ground.

Medical residents are a lifeline for patients in rural communities. During a recent hearing, I highlighted the outstanding work of the residents at Vaughan Regional Medical Center through UAB’s Family Medicine Residency Program. We must continue to invest in programs like these so that more families get the care they need.
