Last week, a fire on the USS Gerald Ford damaged the sleeping quarters of hundreds of sailors and crew members. Thanks to the US-Greece relationship, the ship will be repaired at the Souda Bay base in Crete. When I visited MDC Brooklyn last week, I requested to meet with Rafael. I wanted to make sure that he was safe and being treated humanely. We talked briefly about his case and I told him that I and many other New Yorkers – including Speaker Menin – continue standing with him. I join the Speaker and others in denouncing the decision to deport him.

I’m signing a discharge petition to force a vote to fund parts of DHS that don’t include ICE — agencies like TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard. This will keep our airports running and ensure federal workers get the pay they’ve earned, while we continue demanding accountability for ICE. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I won’t support any measure that gives ICE a blank check to keep harming our communities.

I stopped by @Commonpoint_Qns while I was home in Queens last week to check in with local seniors, update them on what I've been working on in DC, and answer their questions! So many in our community are concerned about rising costs, the status of federal funding in our community, flooding, severe weather, & more. I’m so grateful for their insight and spirit—and in Congress, I’ll keep fighting to make life better for every family in our community.

My heart breaks for our neighbors — especially the young child — who lost their lives in today’s tragic fire in Flushing. I’m praying for their families and loved ones during this difficult time.
