🚨1/8 Excited to share the final version of our #meningioma #mesothelin #CART-cell paper, now published @NeuroOnc with corrected proofs! This preclinical work lays the foundation for applying CAR T-cell therapy to aggressive and treatment-refractory meningiomas. Highlights ⬇️

I am so excited to share our new paper in @Nature: the first programmable, site-specific integration of a large DNA payload into T cells in vivo. A single IV injection results in therapeutic levels of TRAC-targeted CAR T cells in multiple models. #Ack1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">nature.com/articles/s4158… a 🧵

While a blizzard was starting outside, the intensity on the court was red-hot! Yesterday, we held Penn Neurosurgery’s 2nd Annual Pickleball Tournament. The Spine Division showed out, with Drs. Marcotte and Judy taking down the reigning champs, the PGY-2s.

This morning, we had the incredible honor of having violinist David Kim perform for us. He has served as Concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra since 1999 and has traveled the world many times over playing the violin. Hearing his life story was truly remarkable.

More than halfway through my first year at @PennNSG and couldn’t be more grateful. As an intern, you get high-volume neurotrauma exposure, real autonomy with consults and bedside procedures, and meaningful time in the OR with outstanding teachers. To applicants finalizing rank lists: if you want to train hard and be trusted early, come to Penn Neurosurgery.

On a personal note, I am grateful to have met and learned so much from Dr. Brandt, who has been my mentor and friend since throughout med school and we have continued to have many reflective conversations during my intern year. Dr. Brandt’s work as a doctoral candidate in 1978 produced a landmark paper in the @hastingscenter report that illuminated the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and helped catalyze a reckoning in the field. We hope our paper adds to that ongoing narrative with contemporary reflections of our own.

Excited to share a #medicalethics paper just published by @JHUPress reflecting on fundamental aspects of the "research ethics regime," specifically pertaining to #clinicaltrials. Prof. Allan Brandt (@HarvardHistMed ) and I came up with this essay after I helped him prepare a keynote talk titled "2050: What the Future Holds for Bioethical Issues in Biomedical Research" a few years ago. We realized that modern research ethics emerged largely as a post-WWII, protectionist response to atrocities—prioritizing autonomy and informed consent, but leaving key questions underdeveloped. There was also a sharp research-treatment boundary created that has since been blurred by scientific advancements (especially evident in my fields of #neurosurgery #celltherapy #precisiononcology). In this paper, we argue that scarcity of therapies, patient precarity, and structural inequity have shaped clinical trials in ways the current regime doesn’t adequately address. These issues, all related to "justice," shape who participates, who benefits, and who is left out. Check out the paper which is available in @ProjectMUSE: muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/article/…

Newspapers are closing at an emergency-level rate—over the past 20 years, America has lost more than 3,000. For the past six years, the photographer Ann Hermes has been documenting the lives lived in these dying places across the country. See more images: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/059DXx

This was the first ever beta cell transplant for type 1 diabetes... with no immunosuppression The cells were edited to avoid immune attack and – to prove the concept – they were transplanted into the patient's forearm, where they started making insulin!

Medical school in the US is already the most expensive in the world and federal loan caps + loss of Grad PLUS could reshape who gets to train. Our @JAMA_current research letter looks at federal loans among US med students over a decade #MedEd jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
