Pacing your career I just got off a two-hour call with one of the OG digital artists of our time, and one thing that made me understand how they've developed such a strong aesthetic and art practice is that they understand pacing. Pacing involves you doing projects and letting them rest for months or years in order to understand what it is that you are doing and to push the work to a level of refinement that only time or curation grants you. In this call, I was taken through the initial idea of many projects, then several iterations of the project until a final set of images the artist felt were the ultimate work that represented the culmination of the idea. To be honest, all the different phases and iterations that led to the final project felt as strong as the final works, but they had a clear understanding that those hours, months, and years put into an idea are absolutely necessary in order to come to the final versions of the work that is the ultimate representation of their voice. And even when some of the iterations (they showed me thousands of works) felt strong, it is their faith in their artistic vision that trumps the urgency to publish, mint, or sell those works before they are ready. The NFT space is upside down at times and feels like a giant draft of what could be good art. As artists, we can overcome this via the help of curatorial assistance. Not putting together pictures of the same color type of curation, but curation that helps create critical questions as to what one is doing. However, publishing or selling work without either curation or maturation of a concept is becoming increasingly detrimental to artists and the NFT space at large. The urgency to mint has created sub-par art that will most likely hurt the artists, the collectors, and the NFT community. We should all encourage each other to let our work sit for a while and actually be self-critical as to if something is worth selling or just leaving as a draft or finished project you did for yourself and publish it on your website. But when you involve sales, collectors, and a community, so much is put at risk that this should not be taken lightly. 2021 left cancer in this space of "everything is art," and if we actually want more people to come and play with us, well, we need to get our shit together, or all that pseudo-art will continue to broadcast that we aren't doing serious art here.
