Qalibaf is in leader mode. He stresses that wide gaps separate the US and Iran, and that the war may resume. But this interview also offered a (careful) defense of why negotiations are preferable to a return to war. The regime needs to keep the hardline base on its side. It also needs to find a way to reach an agreement with a US president who seems compelled to frame any deal as a capitulation--which the regime and its base cannot accept. It's up to Qalibaf to thread the needle. Finally, be conscious of his role--he is the bridge between the guards and the political elite. This interview was an expression of a united position, following a public spat between the IRGC and the foreign minister.

Two semi-official media outlets of Iran, traditionally considered under IRGC influence have now openly not just criticised the negotiating team but in particular the Foreign Minister of Iran, Araghci has been blamed for “concealment of facts and absence of transparency” The Deputy of Iran’s parliament, Syed Murtaza Mahmoudi has posted that Aragchi would’ve been sacked for his statement on the Straits of Hormuz had it not been wartime .

🚨🇦🇪 Dubai Police are confirmed to be "conducting electronic surveillance operations capable of detecting private WhatsApp messages." It started with a message in a private group chat of airline workers. Just colleagues talking, the kind of exchange that happens in thousands of workplace WhatsApp threads every single day. An airline worker in Dubai shared images of a building damaged during the Iranian attacks... He sent them to people he knew, in a closed conversation he believed was private. He was wrong. Dubai Police were watching. They downloaded the evidence. They built their case. Then they lured the man to a meeting. He showed up. They arrested him on the spot. He now sits in custody, facing charges that include publishing information deemed harmful to state interests, which could mean up to two years behind bars. And then came the detail that should stop everyone reading this cold. In their own police report, authorities stated plainly that the clip had been detected "through electronic monitoring operations." Electronic monitoring of a private WhatsApp conversation between coworkers... Radha Stirling (a human rights activist) put it bluntly: individuals are being tracked, identified, and arrested not for public statements, but for private exchanges between colleagues. And the questions this raises don't stop at Dubai's borders. They land squarely at the feet of WhatsApp and every company that promises its users end-to-end encryption capabilities. Because if a closed chat between colleagues can be intercepted, decoded, and used as the basis for an arrest by an overreaching state, then billions of users worldwide are owed an answer to one very simple question. How private are private Whatsapp groups and messages really?

Cutting the EU out of negotiations in favor of Pakistan-Turkey-Egypt-Saudi was helpful in that these countries actually have a strong interest in ending the conflict and did not just blindly outsource their views to Washington or Tel Aviv. The European response to the JCPOA being violated was revealing and they just do not play a constructive role. At the same time this has allowed a split for countries like France or Spain to take an independent stance which is more helpful.

The ceasefire in Lebanon was originally part of the broader understanding reached in Islamabad between Iran and the United States. However, Israel violated its terms and pushed for a separate deal through direct agreement with the Lebanese government, effectively sidelining the original deal. This Lebanon ceasefire was then framed as a diplomatic success, presented as a first step towards broader normalisation between Israel and Lebanon. This isn't something new. In recent years, Israel has adopted this strategy on several occasions. Even in the case of Syria, it projected de-escalation as part of a broader normalisation framework. Basically, Israel has its own preferred terms of engagement, where even tactical-level arrangements could be sold as strategic gains.

Nothing Trump has said is true. There is no nuclear agreement, and bloodthirsty Zionists just murdered another Lebanese citizen. Iran's ten-point plan remains the framework for any agreement with the Trump regime, but Iran is also prepared for aggression. youtu.be/cqvJ3JaBD5E?si…

🚨🇺🇸🇮🇷 BREAKING: Trump says Iran just agreed to suspend its nuclear program indefinitely. No frozen funds released to Iran either. If true, this is harder than anything the JCPOA ever delivered. Obama gave Iran $150 billion and sanctions relief just to pause enrichment for a few years. Trump is claiming a full suspension with no financial concessions. Source: Bloomberg

(Reuters) - Significant differences between Iran and the United States remain to reach a deal aimed at ending the war, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Friday, adding that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is "conditional on U.S. adherence to the terms of ceasefire". The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said "no agreement has been reached on the details of the nuclear issues," and serious negotiations are required to overcome differences. He said Tehran hoped that a preliminary agreement could be reached in the coming days with mediator Pakistan’s efforts, with the possibility of extending the ceasefire to "create space for more talks on lifting sanctions on Iran and securing compensation for war damages". "In exchange, Iran will provide assurances to the international community about the peaceful nature of its nuclear programme," he said, adding that any other "narrative about the ongoing talks is a misrepresentation of the situation".
