@LucyHunterB @scarycath enough observed to be useful. My recollection is that we used to have the terms "mistakes" and "lies" available to refer to these concepts, but it may be that it is difficult to get funding by pitching oneself to NGO's and news orgs as a mistakes and lies specialist. 2/2

Belatedly, a government guidance document upholds the Supreme Court ruling that a woman is – guess what? – a woman. 70 MPs have signed a rearguard motion opposing it. Presumably they think a man is a woman if he says he is. Among them is Layla Moran, for whom I used to vote.

@LucyHunterB On this subject I recommend "On Bullshit" by Harry G Frankfurt. He distinguishes the liar, who knows and cares about the truth while trying to misrepresent it, from the bullshitter, who speaks with complete complete disregard for the truth or falseness of their utterances.

I don't think she was "consciously" lying. I just think she didn't care to know what the facts actually were, or the affordability or likelihood of meeting this massive, hope-inducing promise to young people, who are still (in my experience) relatively trusting.

Part of this story is a general culture of making promises without any care about whether those are going to be met, whether in terms of govt policy, or as a party to its members. Not necessarily as intentional deceit, but just as bad, in practice, as saying it casually/
