@jessesingal The English in the 1300's believed Britain was peopled with refugees from Troy.

i just want one of these fuckers to trip, fall into a time machine, and then pop out in the 1300s and try to explain to their british ancestors that they share a deep racial essence with the strange bronze-skinned denizens of a land two thousand miles to the southeast

The Odyssey releases on the 17th of July, and I do not want a single one of you watching it. Christopher Nolan has desecrated one of Europe’s foundational myths. This film deserves to fail. Do not give it your money!

@aefondms @heraldscotland Impact or no, it illustrates the character of the people running the city. If they openly declare that they would like to to discriminate against women if only it weren't against the law, we can know that they will do so despite the law when they think can can get away with it.

@scotgov @JohnSwinney @PoliceScotland Presumably the suspect will be taking time to carefully consider his complex arrest, but in the meantime his policy of stabbing people in the street will continue to operate.

Becoming single in your 40s is profoundly depressing. Dating apps are like a visit to the Mos Eisley Cantina.

@DaftLimmy Love how the bookies will let me piss my money away betting on the result of a literal coin toss, and even offer me odds on it because they reckon Scotland has more gambling addicts than Morooco does.

@LucyHunterB @scarycath enough observed to be useful. My recollection is that we used to have the terms "mistakes" and "lies" available to refer to these concepts, but it may be that it is difficult to get funding by pitching oneself to NGO's and news orgs as a mistakes and lies specialist. 2/2

@LucyHunterB @scarycath There is supposed to be a distinction between misinformation (which can be propagated in complete sincerity by people who are simply in error) and disinformation (which is spread deliberately be people who know it to be false) but I agree the distinction is not widely 1/2

While grumping, let's stop using the forbidding, technical-sounding term "misinformation" in any sentence where the word "misunderstanding" would in fact work equally well.

@ForWomenScot @AshleyDalton_MP You do know that we live in an age where facts are easy to check? Why do you believe you can lie every time and not be called out for it? You simply have to know the law, but insist on blatent lie after lie. Do you really think no one is able to check the truth. Truth Matters.

@RichardDawkins I very much doubt they think anything of the sort; however, they are willing to say in public - in Parliament, no less - what they know to be false because they believe saying it is to their advantage.

Belatedly, a government guidance document upholds the Supreme Court ruling that a woman is – guess what? – a woman. 70 MPs have signed a rearguard motion opposing it. Presumably they think a man is a woman if he says he is. Among them is Layla Moran, for whom I used to vote.

@LucyHunterB On this subject I recommend "On Bullshit" by Harry G Frankfurt. He distinguishes the liar, who knows and cares about the truth while trying to misrepresent it, from the bullshitter, who speaks with complete complete disregard for the truth or falseness of their utterances.

I don't think she was "consciously" lying. I just think she didn't care to know what the facts actually were, or the affordability or likelihood of meeting this massive, hope-inducing promise to young people, who are still (in my experience) relatively trusting.

Part of this story is a general culture of making promises without any care about whether those are going to be met, whether in terms of govt policy, or as a party to its members. Not necessarily as intentional deceit, but just as bad, in practice, as saying it casually/
