Australia keeps declaring emergencies and scheduling the response for 20 years from now. Today the government announced $53 billion in new defence spending and said Australia faces its most dangerous strategic circumstances since WWII. This is the third defence strategy in 4 years, with each one using more alarming language than the last The submarines are still not arriving until 2032. The ones they actually need won’t arrive until the 2040s. The UK is designing the long term submarine; their nuclear submarine program is a catastrophic failure with late deliveries, mounting maintenance backlogs, getting worse in every dimension. That’s the boat we are waiting on. Australia has already sent $9 billion to the US and UK for infrastructure with no refund clause if the program collapses. In 30 years, if everything goes to plan, Australia will have 8 nuclear submarines and be able to deploy 2 at any one time. 4 years on and the gap stays open.
