I think the amusing bit is that after all these allegations of 'VARgentina' and 'the tournament is fixed for Infantino's special boy Messi' and so on; Messi really did get robbed off the Golden Ball after one of the single greatest individual performances in any World Cup ever.

I don't think a different referee have changed the result.
But if the roles were reversed, if a South American ref bailed out of jail by CONMEBOL gave, say, Rodri a yellow for complaining and let an Argentinian get away with covering his mouth, we would never hear the end of it.

Two things can be true:
- Argentina played the worst game of the Scaloni era and perhaps the worst game of the past twenty years against a terrifyingly good Spain side who controlled the game at all points
- The refereeing was scandalous and completely unbecoming of a WC final.
