Evangelicals struggle to enter institutions because they think
1. That speaking at institutions from the outside is effective (it's not).
2. That reforming everyday life ("focus on the family" or "preach the gospel") will organically cause political/social change (it doesn't).
Political and social change mainly happens via elites in institutions.

@yikesmom Perhaps he became a pastor 5.5 yrs ago? Thus, it is entirely understandable that they would thank him for the time served as a pastor, not just youth *director.* This is one possible explanation.

As I reread this article one thing stood out, Adams was the youth director while I was a member at SAC, yet the SAC session only thanks him for 5 1/2 years. Is anyone else wondering why they wouldn’t acknowledge his service from 2014 to now?

Growing up, every house in the nhood had multiple children & you expressed sorrow to your 'only child' friends for their lack of siblings. In those days, it was easy to field players for team sports. Now, municipal sports leagues are small, expensive boutiques or gone altogether.

Taking 'smarter and more sophisticated' as a mere observation --and not as an elitist valorization of cultured, intelligent evangelicals-- this is certainly a true dynamic. And it is surely lamentable.

There's a moment when smart Evangelical/Reformed guys in college or grad school go to a Sunday service and it hits them they're smarter and more sophisticated than the guy in the pulpit. They start thinking about Rome. I get it. Srsly DM me. Happy to talk. No judgement.

@IVMiles Okay. But I’ve yet to meet a RC priest who is half as smart/sophisticated as your avg PCA pastor. And I’ve been in colloquiums with RCs/Presbys together. Rome smells good but sophisticated? Hard sale, bruh. The grass isn’t greener.

Every time I wade into the CN issue, I almost immediately encounter complex grace/nature distinctions and gospel/culture relationship issues.
Makes me want to retreat to facile pietistic disengagement.

- incapable of deliberative, persuasion by non-litigious means or
- insufficiently attentive to letter/spirit of current BCO canons (or just crafty/conniving) & thus need more precise legislation to address loophole exploiters or...

The BCO is:
- Canons, not counsel,
- Guards, not guidance,
- Sacred, not secular.
Accordingly, the use of the vowed means of changing what we might think needs adjusting (aka, overtures), means 80+ Os is a sign of our taking vows serious.

I'm about 3/4 of way through this book, and it's quite good. You can tell Trueman probably subscribes to the Bulwark. (iykyk).
It's asks similar questions to Paul Kingsnorth and other "what is wrong with modern man" books. More theology proper than Kingsnorth, which is expected.
