Divine Mercy Sunday, also called the Feast of the Divine Mercy, falls on the Second Sunday of Easter, the Sunday after Easter Sunday. This day concludes the Octave of Easter. The feast is based upon private revelations that Jesus gave to Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska a Polish nun in the 1930s. In her diary she recorded that Jesus asked for a special feast to be celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. He said it should be a day of great mercy for souls, a refuge especially for poor sinners, and that on this day the depths of His mercy would be manifest pouring out graces upon the world. Pope Saint John Paul II established this feast officially when he canonized Saint Faustina on April 30 2000. He also named the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday in the Church's liturgical calendar. On this day Catholics are encouraged to venerate the Image of the Divine Mercy, receive Holy Communion, and go to Confession preferably that day or just before it. Jesus promised through Saint Faustina that souls who do so with trust in His mercy will receive complete forgiveness of sins and all punishment due to them as a grace like a second baptism. The feast highlights God's merciful love shown in the passion death and resurrection of Jesus. It reminds people that divine mercy is greater than any sin and invites everyone, especially those who feel far from God, to turn to Him with trust. Many parishes hold special Masses processions and recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy to celebrate it.
