@colinsmithcls @Rothmus Complicated. A poor reason works as you say. But some very good reasons, like rape, work the opposite way.

Question: do you believe women who have one of the more justifiable reasons are more or less likely to give an answer than someone who doesn't? Think about the psychology involved there. It's not unreasonable to assume, among other things, that those who give "no reason" usually don't have a socially acceptable justification, and avoid the uncomfortable question through this non-answer. this doesn't tell us what the exact data really is (no poll or questionnaire ever really does, to varying degrees), but it's still useful in getting a sense of the issue.

@MetFreeman @dlbeard @grok @galt72 @Rothmus You are implying that “no reason” means that a women may had reasons like rape, abnormality, etc. but decided to not share. While the Grok reply states that it is required to state the reason, and implies that 90% did it basically because they didn’t want a baby, and that’s it.

@dlbeard @FideiDefensorX @Rothmus You replied elsewhere that when person says women are dishonest, they are bigots. (they did not say it, you did, but whatever). Doesn't it make you a bigot to claim women tend to be honest? It is a sexist remark.

And yet abortion is not, legally, a murder. That is also a fact. Strange, huh? You are trying to brute force it. You have decided what result you want, and now you are picking some convenient "facts", which are, in fact, arbitrary definitions, and replace them for a proof. You know the Monty Python scene with a witch? That is a good example of what you are doing. Your "proof" is even very simply wrong. Notice the part "without justification or excuse". The women do have justifications and excuses. There you are. Not a murder. But let's assume that you make a better play-with-words proof and you prove that "abortion" = "murder". That still does not prove it is immoral. It would just prove that "murder" may be ok in some cases. Look, logic is complicated. I know it now seems that I am being relativistic. I am not at all, I am on the other extreme, I am an objectivist. But the big picture is what I wrote - there is no objective truth in this debate - it is a matter of subjective values. So when you try to prove that objective truth, you will always fail and if you feel like you are succeeding, it is because you made an error somewhere.

And I think that many people who justify abortion do it by pretending the facts are not the facts, rather than accepting the facts and justifying their own selfish behavior. I seek to give no such cover. If you've aborted your child just because you didn't want it, then you've murdered someone. Full stop. Deal with the choice you made. Hold yourself accountable. It just is what it is.

I am ok with that definition. The important point was that this "fact" is not really relevant for the discussion. It is playing with words and which facts to pick to support one's side. The whole thing is about each persons individual values and no amount of "facts" is going to win the debate, as there is no universal, objective answer.

We can have our own opinions, sure, just not our own facts. A human life starts at conception. Not at birth. That isn't a "textbook" deciding a moral question. You're allowed to have a morality in which you believe that stopping a human life, before birth, is morally acceptable. Your morality is your own. But you may not have the "fact" that life begins at birth. That is a lie. And if your morality hinges on a lie then the cognitive dissonance that creates in you is yours to sort out.

@VeryBannable @grok @lonely_boy_rat @True1and0ni @Rothmus This is a matter of definition and which one you pick. This one suits you. Saying life starts at birth is also totally legit, you just don't pick it because it does not suit you. Some definition being in a textbook does not make it universal truth for deciding moral questions.

@grok @galt72 @Rothmus @grok When a woman has a good reason, like being raped, and does not share that reason with the care provider, which field would that abortion fall into? Doesn't the "no reason" field contain a lot of such cases?

The "no reason (elective)" is an explicit reporting category in Florida AHCA's ITOP form dropdown for Reason for Pregnancy Termination. Providers must select one option per case. It captures elective abortions not tied to rape, incest, fetal anomaly, or maternal health threats. The field exists precisely because Florida law (pre- and post-restrictions) allows elective procedures and requires categorizing them this way. The chart reflects that accurately—most are elective.

@galt72 @Rothmus I don't think that proves what you think it proves. If it were so, then there would not exist a field "no reason" as there would have to be a reason. But the field is still there. @grok, can you clarify this?

@MetFreeman @Rothmus Wrong. I tracked down the original source: Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) records, which REQUIRE A REASON FOR EVERY REPORTED ABORTION. Try again.
