Having worked in the ventilation field I hard agree with this ⬇️. Improving poorly ventilated spaces is a great idea, but over selling the impact on covid transmission with 🚨🚨🚨 could turn ppl away from improving ventilation because they don't see the improvements they r sold

Recent randomised clinical trial on the use of Germicidal UV to reduce acute respiratory infection (ARI) in Long-term care for older adults. Communal areas corridors/dining had UV irradiation in the intervention arm. No significant impact on ARI reported 1/n

@IanStockport I mean they don't really go into any details on ventilation etc in these homes. Or what levels of particulates get into these homes under no hepa scenarios...maybe intakes already filter well enough. They do consider asthma in the morning presuming they remain in home overnight

@moog77 I assume the standard aircon already had filters, so additional filters changed little compard to exposure when outside.

We know that HEPA filters are really good at reducing particulate concentrations - in this study researchers conduct a cross sectional analysis to see if their use can reduce symptoms amongst asthmatics tldr; no statistical difference between those using or not using HEPA 1/n

In short using UV in communal spaces didn't significantly impact the incidence of acute respiratory infections in long term care for the elderly /end jamanetwork.com/journals/jamai…

Limitations: Participant and staff movement between intervention and control zones was entirely unrestricted. Because GUV was only in common areas, leaving private rooms untreated, the trial couldn't account for exposures and transmission occurring outside the treated spaces. 7/n

I find it problematic that the authors frame these results as a "trend" in the direction of HEPA making a difference, despite their results indicating otherwise. The results do suggest that although we know air particulates can be a trigger for asthma, it's prob complicated 5/n
