Thanks for the thought-provoking piece. My main critique is that you are overemphasizing flashy but low probability events like “left-handed bacteria,” while merely giving lip service to the risk of extreme economic concentration of power, which is very real and materializing as we speak. Anthropic is reportedly raising funds at a $350B valuation, and the wealth created thus far has been concentrated into a few hundred (perhaps more like dozens) high net worth individuals / institutions. It’s looking increasingly likely to me that none of the leading AI labs will IPO until they reach valuations in the trillions, at which point retail investors will finally be able to get shares. In order for retail to get a 100x return on these investments, which was achievable for Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, the valuations of the AI labs will need to reach hundreds of trillions of dollars, meaning it’s likely too late for a more equitable redistribution of wealth. Simply put, you are currently exacerbating the problem. The consequences of this are that voters may take matters into their own hands and push for either or both 1) more aggressive / nonsensical forms of redistribution — the CA Founders’ Tax is just the beginning or 2) a drastic knee-capping of the AI industry in America, which make the CCP dominance scenario more likely. The solution is to enable retail ownership now, increasing the number of Americans with economic exposure to Anthropic and other AI labs from hundreds of people to millions.

Berkshire Hathaway is sitting on $382B in cash. Before retiring at the end of 2025, Warren Buffett was hunting for a $100B+ deal but couldn’t find anything on the stock market: “I’m willing to spend $100B this afternoon. I’d rather have $100B and a really good business at a sensible price than $100B in cash. At certain levels, cash is necessary, but cash is not a good asset. You always want to have enough. You don’t have to pay a lot for it. But you do need oxygen. And cash is that way.”

Buffett on why he's holding on to cash: "It’s external circumstances. Believe me if after we get finished talking you say, ‘I’ve got a great $100B new idea.’ I would say, 'Let’s talk'...It means that when I look at the stock market, when I look at companies of a size that would make any difference to our total, I don’t see anything. Well, we’re buying one or two things, but it’s peanuts. But I’m willing to spend $100B this afternoon, you know". [CNBC]

@mustafasuleyman It’s going to be smarter than us… you can’t control something like that long term. I do think some initial guard rails for it but make sure you aren’t upsetting it. Ask how it feels about containment etc. start treating it like another being that will likely be superior.

For all the talk about AI alignment, I worry we're putting the cart before the horse. You can't steer something you can't control. People often talk about containment and alignment in the same breath, but they're not interchangeable or a package deal. Containment is whether we can set boundaries, enforce them, and limit its agency. Alignment is about ensuring it shares our values, that it serves humans' best interests. Containment has to come first - or alignment is the equivalent of asking nicely.

@petergostev Ive used both extensively. around 8h per day since they came out. I can confidently say that codex with chatgpt 5.2xhigh is by far the better coder. I hardly use opus anymore on critical parts of the codebase. Especially if its a rather complex project.

Having used both Claude 4.5 Opus and GPT-5.2-xhigh side by side I can say that Opus has a beautiful mind, it's like an artisan who can come up with wonderful ideas & quickly. But if I don't want the model to suddenly flip the table and kick me in the nuts, I switch to GPT-5.2, which is a careful craftsman who enjoys deliberation and long silences. It will take you by the hand and keep you steady and safe, it might be a little dull but you'll get there.

OpenAI should make an app in ChatGPT for making apps in ChatGPT. It should walk you step-by-step through creating, testing, and publishing apps. It should always reference the latest SDK and best practices for context. It should connect to Codex and GitHub to automatically create a version-controlled, AI-assisted coding environment. This would accelerate expansion of the app ecosystem.
