@alsejasz @HMBohemond The book is two decades old and it's a minor bit of (silly) worldbuilding with no narrative relevance. I think you'll be okay. If you want to avoid spoilers for any other stuff you're picking up 20 years after everybody else finished it, I'd suggest staying off social media!

Casual reminder that there's a plot element of using God's power to bless an entire river thus turning it into holy water in order to kill an entire vampire army in the earlier seasons. Portraying the Church as evil was bad, but at least God existed and was anathema to evil. In final season they retcon God out of the setting and say crosses only affect vampires because they're terrified of right angles.

@GreeneMan6 Critique of modern media often homes in on subverting expectations - but it's a value-neutral storytelling technique. The actual thing we hate is petty, spite-driven deconstruction. Subverting expectations is a tool frequently used for that, but it can be put to good effect too!

@GreeneMan6 I often point at this particular scene when talking about "subverting expectations", and how that's not ALWAYS a bad thing. The key distinction is that the audience enjoys the new, subverted way the scene plays out more than they would have enjoyed it running its expected course.

@MetricReject @Crime_Penguin OHMSS is a really good late 60s action movie. Has some great set pieces and the action direction + editing is a decade ahead of its time. And like you said, an excellent score. But maybe doesn't work as well as a "Bond movie" especially when compared with the later Connery films.

@SecondA16110022 @DanielParker_13 @aut0m8d The difference is miniscule because "SIDS" basically only happens in a few particular demographic slices. It is, broadly speaking, not something you have to worry about if you are a normal married woman of average intelligence who does not have a drug or alcohol habit.

@DanielParker_13 @MetricReject @aut0m8d Sorry, I missed that. Yes, this is very useful and basically answers the question: there is a correlation between co-sleeping and SIDS, independent of smoking/drinking. The only remaining question is back/stomach sleeping.

to add to this: the vast majority of babies ever born were allowed to sleep on their chests (often on top of their mother), a position in which they *explicitly sleep better* in 1992, some arrogant doctors decided that this deep sleep was the reason some infants were dying (likely a correlation/causation disaster), and recommended that every parent of every child put them to sleep on their back, explicitly because they don't sleep as well and are closer to an awake state in that position so from 1992 forward, parents of new babies have been scared into putting their perfectly healthy babies to sleep in a position that makes their sleep less restful and shorter, thus making life for parents with a newborn significantly more challenging

the vast majority of babies ever born were raised by parents who would consider live video monitoring of a sleeping baby so excessive they’d be confused by the concept. having a baby is hard in a bunch of ways, but a whole lot of parents are making it much harder than it needs to be. they’re doing their best to shame everyone else into having a harder time than necessary too.

@aut0m8d I think there’s good evidence that sleeping like that has a higher chance of sudden infant death, or just plain old infant death by the parents moving around, which is like the worst nightmare imaginable to many people. Do you have a good argument that the studies are flawed?

@shortmagsmle @0x49fa98 Maybe limit it to nonviolent offenders and offer reduction in sentence for participation or something, I dunno. It's crazy that we have a huge pool of people with tightly monitored and controlled living conditions and we DON'T systemically use them for health/nutrition studies.

@shortmagsmle @0x49fa98 I'm sure there are Ethicists who would get mad at the suggestion, but we really should be using prisoners to conduct experiments like this at scale. Trusting retarded normies to monitor their own behavior, especially for long-term studies, is a total nonstarter.
