“We have taken the most human profession in the world and are starting to reduce it to letters and numbers. There is something inherently wrong with that.” #InnovateInsideTheBox
Over the past few months, I have regained a love of running.
Before that, I measured every run, checking for time, mileage, and more.
I would run 20 miles and be disappointed that it wasn’t fast enough instead of celebrating that I was running distances I hadn’t in years.
I am older now, but when I was in my late 20s, I didn’t measure anything because maybe I didn’t have the same technology we have today.
I ran because I loved running.
And I got really good at it.
The more I focused on every single measurement, the more I started to lose my love for running.
Does this ever happen in school?
With an emphasis on being “data-driven” in so many schools, are we focusing more on a score than developing a love of learning?
I would rather have a student who has a bad “score” in school develop a love of learning than one who gets great scores, hates learning, and never wants to do it again.
Focusing solely on the score might feel good now, but it can negate the natural curiosity and wonder children enter school with.
That is why I have focused on the idea of being “learner-driven, evidence-informed.”
Who are we serving? What are their strengths, passions, and areas of growth?
How do we use both qualitative and quantitative measures to serve the learner, not define them?
I am not saying that nothing should be measured or that we shouldn’t focus on progress. I still do that with some runs, and I hope to get better.
From my experience from running and life, I know that if I can find joy and purpose in doing things that are challenging, I am more likely to get better at them over time.
That is the goal.

Today my little learners got to grips with Freeform to plan their next piece of writing. Look at the structure of their plans, use of drawing & text and the connectors to join it all together. A powerful tool that we’re only getting off the starting block with. 🤩 @AppleEDU

Have a EDU friend who is helping 3-5 graders make videos of themselves reading books via @MicrosoftFlip. They then share those videos with k-2 students. They are jazzed and ecstatic 🤩 about sharing to an authentic audience.
Here’s the kicker: there’s more excitement from this than AR points and prizes. 😲🫢
