The Mayor and I both sat in the same meetings and heard the exact same presentations from Calgary Transit and law enforcement. From what we were told the free fare zone isn’t making downtown safer. It actually makes enforcement harder because officers can’t easily check fares or remove problem riders. The transit team recommended removing it specifically to cut down on disorder and improve safety on the system. It is important we have all the information before we vote on May 26th. Please share with everyone on what you know that law enforcement does not know. I am extremely open to persuasion on this matter as one of the largest barriers to transit usage is safety and it is important we get this vote right.

Council votes May 26 on removing the downtown Free Fare Zone. At committee, I voted in favour of removal. Here's my reasoning: it removes $5 million of added pressure on taxpayers, it gives peace officers the tools to address safety on downtown platforms, and it ends a system where downtown riders receive more value than Ward 12 riders.
