@matanboord @AdiAngert זה היה כבר די סוף החורף. שוק המחירים המשיך לאורך כל השנה. זה היה בין השאר מה שהפיל את ליז טראס בבריטניה באוקטובר 2022 (היא לא הבינה שאם היא לא תסבסד את חשבונות הגז לפחות במשהו אנשים יקפאו למוות)

@GadiAleks אני מדמיין לעצמי סצינה כמו במדריך הטרמפיסט. כולם מחכים למוצא פיו של מודל השפה העדכני שבנה מודל השפה הקודם, והוא לבסוף חוזה מילה אחרי מילה: ״התשובה היא, תפסיקו לשחרר מליוני טונות של גזי חממה לאטמוספרה חתיכת מטומטמים שכמותכם״.

עכשיו כשאנחנו רואים ש-AI מצליח להוכיח משפטים מתמטיים וכו', יודעים מה *באמת* ירשים אותי? שימצא פתרון להתחממות הגלובלית. את הפתרון הקסום הזה, שגרשוני ושות' תמיד מבטיחים - שעם התפתחות הטכנולוגיה הפתרונות יבואו מאליהם ולכן צמצום פליטת גזי חממה במחיר כבד לתעשייה הוא לא פתרון.

@GadiAleks ה-AI הוא חלק מהבעיה. האנושות היא כמו ילד בן 5 שמבזבז מיד את דמי הכיס שלו על הצעצוע הפופולרי, בלי לחשוב קצת קדימה. הפתרון הוא להתבגר ולהבין שאין שום קסם שיביא לנו שפע והנאה אינסופיים, אלא פשוט לרסן את עצמנו ולחיות בצמצום עם מה שיש, בראייה של צרכי צאצאינו בעתיד והשכנים שלנו בהווה.

@arielg972 @gilled34 המשבר האקולוגי הוא בעיה התנהגותית. בהחלט לא טכנולוגית. שורש הבעיה הוא שאנחנו לא מסוגלים לרסן את עצמנו, ובמצב כזה זה היה עדיף לנו כמה שפחות טכנולוגיה, ככה לפחות קצב הכריתה של הענף שאנחנו יושבים עליו היה איטי יותר

הנה תחזית לעתיד, שלמרבה הצער הופכת וודאית יותר ויותר. בעוד עשרות שנים, כשיביטו לאחור על העשור הנוכחי והמשמעות שלו להיסטוריה האנושית, התפתחות מודלי השפה (שאני עובד איתם כל יום, הם נהדרים, מהפיכה של ממש) תהיה בליפ קטן ובלתי מורגש יחסית. על הכל יאפיל גרף אחד.

@arielg972 @gilled34 ברור, כי עד עכשיו כל פיתוח טכנולוגי קידם אותנו לעבר קיימות. (ההפך הוא הנכון, כל פיתוח טכנולוגי זירז את בזבוז המשאבים של כדור הארץ, הגדיל את האוכלוסייה ואת קצב את הצריכה, ואת טביעת הרגל האקולוגית כתוצאה מכך).

@MrMatthewTodd There's going to be less people, and they are going to have much more difficult lives (on average). I like your optimism that we're going to learn anything from that 🙃

Whatever happens, whoever is still here in 75 years, whether it’s billions by some miracle, or 500M like James Lovelock suggested was the limit, nature will be the centre of all democracy and future human culture. No more tat and bullshit. The lesson we are about to learn is going to be humanity’s defining experience.

It's popular to blame "the corporations" for all their emissions, but the reason they emit so much CO2e is that's what it takes for them to generate the goods and services that comprise our lifestyle. So if the corps cut their emissions (absent equivalent replacement low-emission energy sources) they would have less energy, and could therefore produce fewer goods and services. That would result in us downstream consumers having less to consume. How many of us would agree to cut our consumption (i.e. "lifestyle") by 80% or so?

@postcarbonsteve @valjohn101 The limiting factor is not information though... 99.9% of those who do have an idea are unwilling to change their lifestyle either

@Race2Extinct Yeah. Could be in the primate nature. There are a very large number of people who are working very hard to improve life for everyone. Even if you consider it hopeless, their effort must be respected.

@MrMatthewTodd Brainwashing only goes so far. At this point, everyone can agree that, say, flying isn't exactly "good" for the environment. And yet, how many are willing to give up this privilege? The facts are out there, and the solutions are out there. It's just that we don't want to change.

Can you imagine - whoever is here in 100 years, if anyone is, when they ask how this happened... We'll tell them Oil companies knew in the 70s but kept quiet because the profits were too great, then less than 20 years after they put man on the moon, in 1988, NASA told the world we were in danger, and the UKs Prime Minister warned the threat was as bad as nuclear war, then the oil companies paid billions to confuse the public and bury the science, and the media oligarchs lapped it up... then in 2006 the former Vice President of the most powerful country on Earth, made a movie warning of the threat and everyone cheered, they gave him an Oscar and agreed we'd all do something, governments tinkered at the edges but the public were brainwashed into thinking they just had to change what kind of straws we used and it would all be OK, if they believed there was a need to do anything at all... And even as countries burned and seas rose, the newspapers owned by the rich did everything they could to stop change from happening, And then eventually a tiny minority of people started protesting - and in the UK they locked them up for longer than some rapists get.... and the public were too distracted by games and entertainments, like in Rome, just 1700 years before... and then... #JustStopOil ?
