I rate President Ramaphosa's SONA last night very highly. He gets a score of 8/10. It was very long, but most of the key points landed. There are green shoots everywhere: 1. The economy is growing. 2. The rand is strong. 3. No load shedding. 4. Tourists are pouring in. 5. Cash-in-transit heists are down. 6. The matric pass rate is high. 7. The national mood is positive. 8. Most roads are in good condition. 9. Real investors are coming in, even fake ones, like those from China. 10. There’s a property boom in Gauteng and KZN. Imagine if the ANC had been removed from power in 2024 and we were left with these permanently squabbling doomsayers. South Africa would have ended up like a baby Somalia by now. #SONA2026 #SONA

I have yet to hear a coherent explanation of why some people have to get building permission and pay rates in Cape Town, while others do not and can simply build structures where they feel like it. What is the criteria for this? Seriously. Is it just because one piece of land has a title deed in your name and the other illegally occupied land has a title deed in someone else's name, or is public land? Where is the cut off defined between who gets a rates bill and building inspectors? Who decides that a property in Parklands must have binding inspections, a rates account, etc, but a building on the side of Baden Powell drive is exempt from those things? I am struggling to work out how this works.

@Kate558140 @LibertarianZA That’s not what the building code says. Anything with 3 walls and a roof is considered a structure and requires building plans. In some areas a pergola is considered a building

@LibertarianZA There are building laws for brick structures. Do you want tin shacks that don't have running water or toilets to have building plans?

Major milestone: South Africa's mining minister calls BEE (mandatory black shareholding) a "burden" that deters investment. He's only applied the analysis to prospecting/exploration so far, and he thinks "exploration adds no value", but still – this IS progress.
Piet le Roux@pietleroux

New race rules for mining in South Africa: TLDR: Government WILL let whites do the expensive & "high-risk" prospecting phase on their own. Government WILL NOT let white people mine too, unless they dilute 30%+ to black shareholders, meet racial hiring & buying quotas, etc.

The state has commercialised EVERYTHING😭 Healthcare? Private medical aid. Education? Private schools and tutors. Transport? Uber, Bolt, private buses. Security? Armed response. Electricity? Inverters and solar. Water? JoJo tanks. Even refuse removal is becoming a side hustle now Our state can’t pride itself on providing anything except SONA and SOPA speeches and press statements. Citizens are paying taxes and paying again privately just to survive . We’re basically living in a country where government is a motivational speaker, not a service provider. It may sound funny… but also very painful 🇿🇦💔

Tenant: no 2024 Tenant: water in bath not draining fast Me: I'll send a plumber over right away! Any other issues? Tenant: No 2025-2026: Tenant: Dear Barry, I am writing to formally notify you of a serious mold problem in the bathroom my of unit at 1234 Figueroa St, which requires your immediate attention. The ongoing presence of mold has created unsafe and unhealthy living conditions for my family and me. Members of my family are currently experiencing health symptoms consistent with mold exposure. As you are aware, landlords are legally required to maintain rental units in habitable condition, and the current condition of the bathroom fails to meet basic habitability standards. I hope this matter can be resolved quickly and professionally. I expect your prompt response. Sincerely, Jimmy

@PhumlaniMMajozi I would suggest moving far right. Politics is often extremism. Playing the middle ground is making no friends and no enemies, it’s the ideal but for some strange reason doesn’t seem to stick.

My advice to the next DA leader: Shift the DA slightly to the right. Slightly. South Africa is a conservative society. South Africans hate crime and illegal immigration. Support and encourage legal immigration, but don't tolerate illegal immigration. Take a tough stance against crime. If you do that, you will get far more votes. #politics #markets #MajoziCommentary

@GodPenuel Really though provoking questions but I am not sure one could answer positively or negatively. Yes progress was made at a fast rate but does that mean better. 🤷‍♂️ Hopefully we can unity and dream of a future where all South African succeed.

Genuine question: If European settlers did not come to South Africa, would indigenous folk have eventually started mining aggressively & selling their commodities at fair international rates? Would South Africa be more developed than it is & would there be more income equality? Or would most natives still be living in huts, farming, hunting & very far off from mining or developing infrastructure at global levels? Are Black South Africans lying to themselves about life being better before Colonialists? If not lying to themselves, what's stopping them from moving to tribal land, building houses & farming livestock and crops? Were the British & Dutch settlers the best thing to happen to Black people, and especially Black women? These are genuine questions. I find myself grateful that I don't live a rural subsistence life, and I'm not sure if I'm just indoctrinated into Western living or if it's actually way better. Pen.

HOW THE HELL do we dare demand that B-BBEE gets scrapped, and suddenly the entire Black South African comment section EXPLODES in hysterical meltdowns?! If we're supposedly such brain-dead, subhuman, knuckle-dragging Neanderthals who couldn't survive without handouts, then WHY wouldn't you jump at the chance to be chosen purely on MERIT? Please, go prove us all wrong. Show the world you're not the incompetent charity cases you keep acting like. Why the obsession with forcing your way into controlling shares of White-owned businesses? Why the desperate clawing for quotas that explicitly shut White South Africans out of jobs, promotions, and opportunities in our own country? You demand "equality" while engineering our exclusion, how shameless can you get? And don't even start with the land bull💩. Why the entitlement to free land when every White family had to pay, work their a$$es off, and build from nothing under hostile conditions? Pay your own way like we had to during apartheid and after, or shut up about "justice." THREE FULL DECADES, and you're still whimpering for racial crutches, still insulting every Black person alive by implying your race is too pathetic to compete without rigged rules and forced handouts. You're not empowering anyone, you're infantilizing your entire people, trapping them in an ongoing cycle of victimhood while a tiny connected elite gorges itself. Grow a spine. Compete. Earn it. Or admit once and for all that the whole "redress" narrative is just a mask for institutionalised theft and an inferiority complex. This shit has gone on long enough; it's disgusting, it's insulting, and it's destroying the country for everyone, even you.

@grok @PresidencyZA @CyrilRamaphosa But south africa already has basic health care. Imaging we could cut the wage bill by 50% and add that to the current health care or education. That's not a small amount of money which doesn't create economic growth. Wasted money

That's an interesting pivot. In 2026, SA MPs earn ~R1.3M annually (post-3.8% hike per Presidency), ministers ~R2.5M, president ~R4.2M—indeed 3-10x the avg salary (~R400k-600k per Stats SA/Talent.com). Total parliamentary wage bill is ~R1B (400+ members), a drop in the R2.3T budget. Cutting it could symbolically fund minor service tweaks, but NHI needs R250B+. Better as part of broader austerity? What cuts specifically?
