Not "better than" - "in addition to." Dane Brugler is very smart. He knows more about the players in the draft than any one scout in your scouting dept does. Ignoring him is silly. And because of the wisdom of crowds, ignoring the collective judgment of draft analysts is also silly. To take only the most obvious example, the 49ers have been very bad at drafting RBs for years now. Over and over, the team has wasted valuable picks on RBs who quickly became busts. That suggests something is wrong with the process you describe above, at least with regard to RBs. That doesn't mean you stop relying on your internal evaluations. But given that your internal evaluations of RBs have been consistently overestimating the ability of the backs you're drafting, you obviously should take the collective judgment of Dane and other analysts into account, and be more cautious when you are reaching massively. There's no evidence the Niners are doing that - instead, they just reached again for an RB.

I think people truly don't know the math on how many prospects, how many games, there is to watch and how long it actually takes. There's over 300 prospects. Each prospect has 11-14 games of just the previous years tape to watch. If you only assume 30 min per game for all-22 and endzone views on a straight watch-through, that's 5.5-7 hours per prospect, per season. 300 prospects X 5.5-7 hours is 1,650-2,100 hours of film to watch on players. They have 11 weeks and 4 days from Feb 1- the draft. 81 days. That's over 20 hours per day, every day, to watch just the guy's 2025 film, to watch every prospect. If you cut it down to 200...you're still over 13 hours per day, every day, just watching film. No meetings, no travel, not one single day off and never watching any play more than once. That's without watching the senior bowl and practices, without watching the combine, without watching the shrine bowl and practices, thats without player interviews. What people are expecting is not actually possible.

People can diss the consensus board all they want, and teams *should* operate off their own rankings. BUT… 1. If youre taking the 240th guy on the consensus board at 100. You should trade down and take him. It’s just bad resource management. 2. If your board consistently has guys ranked 100 slots off consensus, maybe your board sucks.

Here are the relative athletic scores of all eight 49ers draftees in one spot. A ton of GREEN. In a world of subjective takes/mock drafts, SF showed a clear focus on objective measurements. This has been a 49ers' theme for about 3 drafts now. Perhaps not a coincidence results have started to improve since then
