Over the last 3 weeks I've easily spent 50+ hours using Cursor. Previously, I had spent a few hours with it - making basic sites and very simple applications. I have zero coding experience. But I wanted to challenge myself to actually finish a project, end-to-end. Enter, Town Vitals. Built 100% with, and now managed by Cursor. No CMS. Town Vitals is the best US drinking water resource in the world (pretty cool to be able to say that). It is the ONLY site that is able to find your exact water system using your home's address. This is important because many towns/counties have upwards of 180+ water systems! 100 of those could have problems, but that might not impact you at all. So identifying your exact water system is imperative. It's also the only site that is up-to-date (and will be updated quarterly) and actually provides in-depth context about the violations your water system is facing. Violations shared by the EPA look like this "Monitoring, routine (rtcr)• Revised Total Coliform Rule"....UHHH what? Town Vitals takes that and provides the following: "On Nov 30, 2023, REESEDALE MUTUAL in CA, which serves 76 residents failed to conduct required bacterial monitoring under the Revised Total Coliform Rule. Coliform bacteria serve as indicators of potential contamination - their presence can signal problems with water treatment or distribution system integrity that could allow harmful pathogens to enter the water. This violation requires Tier 3 public notification within one year. Regular testing is essential because contamination can occur through breaks in pipes, cross-connections, or problems with water treatment. Without proper monitoring, the water system cannot verify that the water is free from potentially harmful bacteria. The water system resolved this violation and returned to compliance on Jan 22, 2024." But, if that level of detail is too much, no problem - maybe just knowing your water system has active violations is enough for you to make a change and filter your water (or better - stop drinking tap). We also pull out of those violations all the times your water system actually had contaminants found in your water! (Yes this is a real example, 56 times this water system tested ABOVE the EPA limits for Arsenic!!!) There's a lot of additional interesting information available like Fluoridation status and more. In the coming weeks I'll be adding the actual Fluoridation levels, Lead levels, Copper levels, and PFAs. This site is a Database nightmare (at least for me, a complete noob) - there are over 150,000,000 data points and many more coming. Lot's of improvements to be made, but excited about this project and even more excited about the prospect of building sites entirely with Cursor. AI coding tools like Cursor and Replit will make the world awash with software products, but I don’t think it happens overnight Most people are not persistent - any roadblocks at all and they quit. Honestly just having to set up a DB and get api keys is a challenge for some (even though it’s clicking and copy paste) These tools will improve but right now it takes A LOT of patience and trouble shooting to get things working and the last mile of getting a great code output on text alone is a hard challenge to solve.
