🎉 I got tenure! When looking for a faculty job, it was important to me to find a position that will provide me with resources (including freedom) to be creative and try ambitious ideas. R-Lab opened at the University of California, Davis in March 2019.

“You should be careful being so energetic and confident while giving a talk because people might think you are not professional”. Are men ever approached and told this after they give a talk?

(2/2) Note: faculty from outside the department usually do not really count as much as potential future collaborators since they do not get to make the final hiring decision

(1/1) In honor of my father-the best mentor in the world- here are tips for for faculty interviewing. when asked with whom you could collaborate, go as broad as possible. Mention faculty that are also outside your area and explain how their research is connected to yours.

Voyant Photonics is hiring for several positions: voyantphotonics.com/careers/ . We aim to revolutionize 3D LIDAR, shrinking it down onto a silicon chip and enabling a future of ubiquitous chip-scale active sensing using silicon photonics. Check it out!

@diegus841 Diego-saying that someone “has potential “ implies that she is not “there yet”. It means much less than discussing the concrete achievements/discoveries a scientist/engineer had. In general: if possible, be concrete, show evidence.

@Michallipson I don't want to be misinterpreted, but I really can't understand. The point in gender discrimination is that a former supervisor says that a female scientist has potential? I promise, my question has not passive aggressive intent.

(2/2): I also see a lot of:” she has a lot of potential”, she is a “rising star” (for a senior PI), as well as “I have mentored her ”, “I encouraged her” , etc. I almost never see those in letters for male scientists/engineers.

(1/2)When writing references for a female, let's be mindful of implicit bias. Emphasize actual accomplishments as opposed to general adjectives describing effort and desire to succeed. I personally see a lot of: she is a “go-getter”, “trendsetter”, “ambitious” “enthusiastic”.

@Michallipson @TechnionUSA @TechnionLive @iag_usp Sorry for your loss. Thanks for posting this classical 70’s-Technion-picture, also a reminder of the massive impact of his generation. I recognize Steve and Yossi Avron (as a student). Avraham Suhami, who passed in April started Elscint around then in the department’s basement.

10 days ago my father, Prof. Raymond Fox (later Reuven Opher), has left us. The world has lost an inspiring, brilliant, caring man. He was one of Technion Physics Dept, founders in Israel (2nd top left) and later joined the Univ. of Sao Paulo (IAG), Brazil

In the next few weeks I'll be sharing some of the wisdom of an incredible mentor- my father. Here is #1 :" Try to make an impact on science or on technology. Make sure not to be in-between, doing neither. "

Sad news about Mark! It's a huge loss not only to the #plasmonics #nanooptics community but also the wider #photonics community! Where to get those tricky (but very constructive) questions now at conferences?
Alexandra Boltasseva@ABoltasseva

Honoring a true #greatscientist and charismatic person prof. Mark I. Stockman. #Plasmonics community and conferences would never be the same without Mark on the first row... ⁦@GeorgiaStateU#nanolasers #nanophotonics #plasmonics #nanooptics
