Has Kemi Badenoch finally reached the limits of her ability to lead the Conservative Party? At Prime Minister’s Questions she again chose to attack the Prime Minister over a government decision taken on the basis of legal advice from the Attorney General. For someone who has never held an office carrying that level of constitutional responsibility, the tone was not serious scrutiny but political theatre. What makes this even more extraordinary is the condition of the party she leads. The Conservatives are emerging from fourteen years in government that left the country economically strained and politically divided. Instead of reflection or humility, the country is presented with weekly outrage and accusation from a party that refuses to acknowledge the consequences of its own record. The electorate has begun to deliver its verdict. A by election result that leaves the Conservatives trailing in last place on barely two per cent of the vote is not a warning sign. It is a political alarm bell. At present, other parties are commanding more public attention and support than the Conservatives themselves. Yet still the attacks continue, as though the public has somehow forgotten the years of instability and failure that preceded this government. Opposition is meant to provide credible challenge and serious alternatives. What we are witnessing instead is noise, bluster, and a leadership that appears increasingly detached from political reality. The Conservative Party has a long history in British politics and once commanded serious respect. Watching it reduced to this level of irrelevance is deeply damaging to the health of parliamentary debate. The party must decide whether it intends to rebuild itself into a credible opposition or continue down the path of shouting from the sidelines while the country simply stops listening.
