This analysis is complete and utter nonsense - it’s what happens when people with no experience of politics at all play at being “analysts”. No one, on becoming leader, has high name recognition. (GHL’s is remarkably high, in fact, undoubtedly because he has done so well in Cape Town.) But this changes fast for 3 reasons: (1) the new leader gets a massive free media boost the moment he gets elected, (2) the party spends significant amounts on promoting the new leader and (c) - most important of all - nothing drives name recognition like an election campaign when tens of millions are spent on comms with his face and his voice delivering the core message. This is exactly what happened with every leader the DA has had since Tony Leon, and doubtless before that too, although that was before my time.
The Common Sense@CommonSense_ZA

Geordin Hill-Lewis, the likely future leader of the DA, is facing a hidden challenge: despite his success as Cape Town’s mayor, 59% of South Africans don’t know him. While many believe his leadership could improve South Africa’s future, his lack of visibility, especially among black voters, could be a major roadblock. With the DA counting on him to turn things around, will Hill-Lewis be able to break through the noise and make his mark on national politics? @SABCNews @Chrispin_JPhiri Actually, it's mainly your President's job to decide if he wants the DA in his government. And he keeps on saying he does!

@Bruceps @JamesRLorimer @Our_DA Non racialism isn't backward looking but must be the progressive endgoal. All DA policy sees past injustice, and the damage in other societies divided on race. Never again. Focus on those who need empowering, not already empowered. This targets 'black' people in need. Not elites.

@JamesRLorimer @Our_DA I disagree. It's not too hard either to figure out which black people are disadvantaged. A short drive around any part of the country would make it abundantly clear...

Soft-left commentators ( like Peter Bruce and Stephen Grootes) opining that a change of DA leadership means a chance to take account of race again in party policy. They don’t get it: Non-racialism is a principle. Race is not a proxy for disadvantage. You don’t need a proxy, you can measure actual disadvantage. They are proposing the DA fall into line with policies that advantage some people and disadvantage others on the basis of their skin colour. Under the ANC this has been the robber’s charter. Accepting it would be suicide for the party and worse, suicidal for the country.

@AfricaCheck What? It was a general remark on maintenance (new question). Why would you weave in your view, based on some topic several minutes earlier, position as a quote, then 'fact-check' it on the new words you inserted? Suggests bad intent. As for clarity, why not just refer to above?

Our evaluation at that point of the interview was that Zille was still outlining her plan to address JHB's water crisis. If her focus had subtly but significantly shifted to general maintenance, it's worth noting that our requests for supporting evidence before publishing received no response. Zille's team is, of course, still welcome to clarify, and we would gladly update our report if necessary.

🚰 Johannesburg’s water crisis has become a political flashpoint. Veteran politician Helen Zille (@helenzille) made 6 claims about Joburg & Cape Town’s water infrastructure. We fact-checked them: ✅ 2 correct ❌ 4 incorrect 🔎 Read more: africacheck.info/zille_water

@AfricaCheck Why would you add those words in parenthesis, which Zille did not say, and use them to 'prove' her claim false? Really bad faith! Completely discredits you. Now, we must go around fact-checking the fact-checkers. What Zille said comes straight out of the AG report, see pg 108.

Lots calling the DA weak for letting itself be abused, and de-escalating conflicts. The alternative is far worse. I think it is the greatest show of strength to put national interests above party interests. To be calm in the face of crisis. I don't see anybody else doing that.

Trump: Free speech is a cornerstone of democracy, the outrageous sensitivity and insane deference before “offence” is a disease. Pathetic. Grow up! Trump: I kicked Zelensky out of the White House, and terminated peace talks, in the middle of a war, cause he was offensive.
