This week’s #onlywithHCR Series features the Bedois et al. (2024) publication, “Sea lamprey enlightens the origin of the coupling of retinoic acid signaling to vertebrate hindbrain segmentation.” With #HCRimaging, @Aldh1a2 and her colleagues were able to investigate how hindbrain segmentation varies between sea lamprey embryos treated with Talarazole and those treated with DMSO. Read their publication on @NatureComms in more detail here: #MOESM1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">nature.com/articles/s4146…

This week’s #FluorescenceFriday user is Madeline Ryan, a research technician in the @tonytsai00 lab! @madeline__ryan uses #HCRimaging as a robust way to map cell-type expression patterns of different adhesion molecules and signaling pathway players in the developing zebrafish spinal cord. Check out her stunning 3D projections of a 10 somite stage zebrafish whole-mount embryo below:

This week’s #FluorescenceFriday user is Joshua Raji, a postdoctoral fellow in the Potter Lab @flyknows! @jojshmanraji’s favorite aspect of #HCRimaging is that whenever he visualizes his images on the confocal microscope, “the signals are bright with less background, and it always works like magic!” Check out his stunning HCR RNA-FISH images of the mosquito antenna below:

This week’s Research Spotlight is on the Lopéz et al. (2023) publication, “Molecular characterization of nervous system organization in the hemichordate Saccoglossus kowalevskii!” #HCRimaging enabled Lopéz et al. to characterize the expression of multiple neural markers, which revealed S. kowalevskii’s strong regional specialization of its nervous system. I am so happy to share the main portion of my PhD work @eBGLab, out now in preprint! 🎉 We investigated the evolution of the anterior neuroectoderm to trace the origin of the #forebrain. What did we find? Have a look at this tweetorial to find out! 🧵 tinyurl.com/53pbph8t

I may be in lab on a Saturday, but at least the staining is gorgeous! Possibly the prettiest imaging I’ve ever done. Prdm1a in magenta, myoD1 in green, on 10ss ZF embryos. I ❤️ HCR!

This week’s #FluorescenceFriday user is @Holguera_Isabel! #HCRimaging of deadpan mRNA (blue) allowed Isabel to identify neural stem cells in the Drosophila optic lobe (outlined with a white dashed line) and central brain. Hoechst (orange) marks cellular nuclei. Check out her latest publication here: doi.org/jxrz.

An impressive historical review by Gurdon & Hopwood (2000) on how Xenopus was introduced to experimental biology. I knew that Xenopus was used for pregnancy text, but did not know about the fascinating story of Lancelot Hogben, who made this happen. 1/11 ijdb.ehu.es/web/paper.php?…

For this week’s #FluorescenceFriday spotlight, we’d like to congratulate Mengmeng Liu and Jun-Yuan Ji on their recent preprint: doi.org/jvj5! They used #HCRimaging to validate the repressive effects of Wg signaling at the cellular level in fruit fly larval adipocytes.
