Just like to thank @MilesRamiles for kindly sending me pictures of Captain Ian Kerr from Gorebridge. It's always nice to put a face to a name.
Robert Miles@MilesRamiles
@Newbattleatwar Here he is at Lakenheath, Suffolk 25th January 1943... so almost an anniversary there.... He's at the back, 2nd from the left.

At around 8min45-50seconds seconds - one of the possibilities for this (left handside) officer - is perhaps - Ian Kerr.
The camera is rather more focused on Eisenhower there though ;-)

English

@MilesRamiles Hi Robert, thanks for getting in touch. It's for a commemorative book on local casualties. I'm trying to get as many photos as possible.

@Newbattleatwar What do you need it for?
I have a few pictures of him - although most are quite grainy...

@henryspil @mbevan2002 @curatorian "The Bloody Battle for Tilly: Normandy 1944" by
Ken Tout - is about "The fierce battle to capture the French village of Tilly-la-Campagne".
La Bataille de Tilly-Sur-Seulles - by Stéphane Jacquet covers the Battle for Tilly-Sur-Seulles.
Both different places get called "Tilly"

English

@mbevan2002 @curatorian Ken Tout’s The Bloody Battle for Tilly is a gripping account

Today in 1944, in Normandy, Sherman tanks pass a crashed Spitfire on their way to attack Tilly-sur-Seulles. This aircraft from No.412 Squadron 🇨🇦 was reportedly flown by F/O Herbert Garwood, and crashed after an engine failure.#OnThisDay #WW2

@ReassessHistory The book I would love to research and write (but will never get to) is to reassess the German panzer arm in WW2.
Read some illuminating personal accounts but anything more general you’ve come across & would recommend?

@AndyAitcheson @WeHaveWaysPod @ColesBooks There's a map on the back of that that covers much of the same area... and "snapshots" throughout mapping unit positions etc.

English

@AndyAitcheson @WeHaveWaysPod @ColesBooks Have you seen the book "Breaking the Panzers" by Kevin Baverstock ? - for example -

I saw these @WeHaveWaysPod fest 4 and bought myself the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry one.
They’re fab, zoomed into the area around Fontenay Le Pesnel and Rauray.
Cost me £20 but looks great on my wall.

Hard to photograph, but you can get a copy for your wall from @ColesBooks. Pontoon bridge in the wrong place ... buildings drawn in the middle of the road ... less than ideal ... but IDEAL FOR NAVIGATING BLACK TUESDAY @almurray . coles-books.co.uk/books/history/…
English

@AndyAitcheson @WeHaveWaysPod @ColesBooks They are online, in a variety of archives.
The Tilly one - I think often seems quite hard to find in comparison to some of them -

If you are trying to make your own annotated ones - i.e. for Point 103 - at this scale - it can entail "stitching them"
English

@MilesRamiles @WeHaveWaysPod @ColesBooks It’s all from the same GSGS sheet, are either of these from the map you bought from Cole’s?
The one I bought is very clear

@MilesRamiles @rentaquill Many thanks for this. It’s on my list of places to visit.

A question for @WeHaveWaysPod @rentaquill @WW2TV @almurray
Point 103 - straightforward enough to locate ? An Essex Yeomanry action discussed when I handed the regimental association copies of the new book this week. Sadly a weekend on duty ahead and not a military festival.

English

@KeoghaneStephen @rentaquill BTW - will you also be visiting -
facebook.com/groups/5319954…
The Museum in Tilly sur Seulles?
This (below) is rather weathered and chipped now - but this is as it once was...

English

@KeoghaneStephen @rentaquill The 147th Essex Yeomanry war diary - partly - says - on 9d6m1944 - "RHQ established at 854707 - all vehicles arrived safely."
854707 would actually be a bit to the south of i.e. 854710 - where shown - on this particular map -

English

@rentaquill Very kind of you.
I need to go back to my references to see exactly where the Sextons were sited on 103.
