This neat looking problem was first presented by Pietro Mengoli in 1644 and was solved by Euler in 1735. And why Basel? It is just because Euler was from Basel(So was Bernoulli, though he was unsuccessful towards the problem). Though the problem looks neat and easy. It isn't unless you know complicated integrals. But Euler's magnificent observation just used Taylor's expansion of sine and polynomials to solve this problem in less than 4 lines.

When Gauss was 10 years old and attending elementary school, his teacher asked the class to add all the numbers from 1 to 100. A few moments later, young Gauss raised his hand and shouted out the answer, while the other students began tediously adding the numbers one by one. How did he come up with the answer so fast? Young Gauss realized that the sequence could be divided into pairs: the first number, 1, with the last number, 100; the second number, 2, with the second-to-last number, 99; and so on. Each pair would sum to 101. Recognizing that there were 50 pairs in total, Gauss multiplied 50 by 101 to obtain the sum of the sequence. The result, 5050, popped into his head almost instantly.

#OnThisDay July 1, 1646, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was born. One of history's greatest polymaths, Leibniz transformed mathematics, philosophy, logic, engineering, and computing. His ideas continue to shape the modern world nearly four centuries later. Leibniz independently developed calculus alongside Isaac Newton. While a famous priority dispute followed, the notation Leibniz introduced—∫ for integrals and d for derivatives—is still the standard language used by mathematicians, scientists, and engineers today. The elongated ∫ symbol comes from the Latin word summa, meaning "sum." It elegantly represents adding infinitely many tiny quantities to calculate areas, volumes, probabilities, and much more. Long before digital computers existed, Leibniz championed the binary number system—using only 0 and 1. Today, every computer, smartphone, and digital device ultimately processes information in binary. In 1673, Leibniz demonstrated his Stepped Reckoner, an advanced mechanical calculator capable of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It was one of the most ambitious calculating machines of its era. Leibniz also imagined a "universal language of reasoning" where logical arguments could be solved systematically. Many historians see this vision as an intellectual ancestor of symbolic logic, computer science, and even artificial intelligence. His philosophical principle that we live in "the best of all possible worlds" sparked centuries of debate and inspired later thinkers, including Voltaire, who famously satirized it in Candide. Leibniz was more than a mathematician. He worked as a diplomat, historian, legal scholar, engineer, librarian, and scientist—demonstrating how curiosity across disciplines can drive extraordinary innovation. Few people have influenced as many fields as Leibniz. Calculus, formal logic, binary arithmetic, mechanical computing, and philosophy all bear his lasting imprint.
