Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the White House in 1979, and he never stopped pushing for renewable energy. In 2017, at 92, he leased 10 acres of his own farmland in Plains, Georgia to SolAmerica. The 3,852 panels generate 1.3 megawatts on a clear day and supply over half the town's electricity. The contract runs through 2042. By then it will have produced 55 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy. UGA researchers are now using the site to study agrivoltaics, planting wildflowers under the panels to support pollinators while the array generates power above them. Rosalynn Carter championed pollinator corridors before her death in 2023. The wildflowers under the panels are partly her legacy. Carter passed away in December 2024 at 100, in the same town where he was born and farmed peanuts. The panels he leased the land for keep turning toward the sun, powering the town that raised him, on land his family worked for generations.

BREAKING: DHS just awarded the largest border-wall contract in U.S. history—$1.7 billion—and it's for Big Bend National Park. The contract itself says it's for "border wall" segment BBT-4 in the national park. This raises alarm bells after CBP commissioner said only roads would be built in the park. Nobody gets paid $1.7 billion to build a road.

The most specific detail from Wednesday's hearing is the one a judge supplied from the bench. A federal appeals judge asked DOJ why its Office of Legal Counsel published a memo claiming DOJ had authority to demand voter rolls - the night before oral arguments in the active appellate case challenging that authority. "Why would there be an OLC opinion, after all the lawsuits have been filed, and we're at the point where the Court of Appeals, why would there be an opinion at that point in time, as opposed to before everything takes place?" This is the DOJ citing the DOJ's opinion that the court should rule for the DOJ. A panel including a Trump appointee found this notable enough to question directly from the bench. The trial court judge who originally ruled against DOJ in Michigan was also a Trump appointee. DOJ has now lost six of these voter roll cases. It is suing 30 states plus D.C. for unredacted registration records including Social Security numbers and dates of birth - to feed into a DHS database searching for noncitizen voting in support of Trump's unfounded claims of widespread illegal voting. The DOJ's legal theory rests on interpreting "come into possession" to include records the officials themselves created. The panel: "If you bake a cake, you don't say, 'I came into possession of it.'"

Once again, the way the press covers Trump makes it unnecessarily difficult to distill accurate takeaways from the recent trip to China. Allow me: Xi suggested the United States was a country in decline. Xi is known for speaking precisely. Why might he have said this? Because he sees it and he hears it! He sees Iran and Venezuela and the Greenland embarrassment, to name 3, and internal strife in the US, and morons like Hegseth, and Trump's polling at home. So, then Trump retorts that Xi "was referring to Biden when he spoke to decline" - and the media covered that brainless retort as being relevant, thus giving it life. If they felt they had to cover tat nonsensical remark, they should have simply added - "if that was what Xi meant, he would have said that, but he didn't and he is known for speaking precisely." How hard would that have been? Two real takeaways from China are - Xi believes the US under Trump is a nation in decline; and Xi warns the US not to interfere on whatever they choose to do in Taiwan. Trump is weak. Much of the rest is colored bubbles.

And here’s the contradiction nobody’s talking about: Publicly, Trump keeps selling tariffs and deficit-heavy policies as economic strength. Privately, his administration appears deeply concerned those same policies are helping drive the bond market stress they’re now trying to contain. That’s the tell. If things were truly under control, they wouldn’t be quietly managing Treasury demand behind the curtain. They wouldn’t be floating regulatory changes so banks absorb more government debt. They wouldn’t be trying to stop long-term yields from blowing out. Because they understand something most Americans don’t yet: If the bond market breaks, stocks are next. And unlike a stock correction, bond stress hits EVERYTHING: • housing • jobs • lending • business investment • government budgets • consumer spending The stock market is the casino people watch on TV. The bond market is the load-bearing wall holding the entire damn building up.
