Alas, poor country,  Almost afraid to know itself. It cannot  Be called our mother, but our grave, where nothing  But who knows nothing is once seen to smile;  Where sighs and groans and shrieks that rent the air  Are made, not marked; where violent sorrow seems A modern ecstasy.

Kakababu's Exile in England 🇵🇸🍁
The concept of ‘citizenship’ is cancer and the sooner people start questioning this received wisdom, the better. If you live in a certain realm, you should enjoy every single right guaranteed by that realm.

This meant dilution of environmental laws, labour laws, human rights laws, federal autonomy, civil society, academia and privacy, by a “strong” government. So even the “pure economics” Modi voters were both morally repugnant and with very shortsighted economic imaginations.

Also since people keep bringing up Modi’s economic promise in 2014, it’s important to be clear on what exactly that was : it was the same congress strategy of liberalisation, but with “force” so unencumbered by human rights or stakeholder opinion. +

A letter signed by more than 600 citizens and civil society groups said that Surya Kant’s comments about environmentalists were ‘highly objectionable’ and ’disturbing’, and urged the SCto withdraw his oral remarks made in court. @aathiperinchery✍️ thewire.in/environment/gr…

Evening viewing recommendation? On @criterionchannl, watch Hal Ashby's HAROLD AND MAUDE (1971). ❤️ Equal parts gallows humor and romantic innocence, Ashby's film dissolves the line between darkness and light along with the ones that separate people by class, gender, and age, and it features indelible performances and a remarkable soundtrack by Cat Stevens.

Farewell to Stephen Colbert! I will miss your laundering the reputations of war criminals, like when you danced with Kissinger. It's a shame Trump got you fired because he made you a liberal martyr instead of the parable of the Obama era’s humorless and empty corporate moralism.

I admire Colbert's wit & I don't think he should have lost his show *but* elite liberals throwing themselves encomia parties with A-list celebrities as their form of symbolic resistance amounts to nothing politically & is part of what brought us to the current ideological impasse
Spencer Althouse@SpencerAlthouse

this was so sweet. Stephen Colbert just ended his final episode of The Late Show while singing "Hello, Goodbye" with Paul McCartney. his family and the show's crew then joined them on stage before Paul turned off the lights to the Ed Sullivan Theater
