Imagine stepping outside at 6 PM and the air is still 42.1°C. Now add enough humidity to push the wet-bulb temperature to 29.1°C. That's what I measured today in Bhalswa, Delhi. The human body cools itself by evaporating sweat. At wet-bulb temperatures like this, that defense starts failing. A wet-bulb of 29°C is already in the range where prolonged outdoor work becomes dangerous. And this is after sunset is approaching, not at peak afternoon heat.

Call me petty but having been an adult in 2014 with clear memories of that election campaign cycle, I will never let this “we voted for Modi for economic transformation not bigotry” lie become normalised. Everyone voting in 2014 knew who he was from 2002 - everyone.

This meant dilution of environmental laws, labour laws, human rights laws, federal autonomy, civil society, academia and privacy, by a “strong” government. So even the “pure economics” Modi voters were both morally repugnant and with very shortsighted economic imaginations.

Saddened by the loss of lives in a mining accident in Shanxi Province in China. On behalf of the people of India, my condolences to President Xi Jinping and the people of China. May the bereaved families find strength in this tragic hour. Praying for the early and safe recovery of all remaining missing persons.
