As Colorado rolls out SB25-003, the state's version of an "assault weapons" ban coupled with a complex and expensive permit-to-purchase scheme, there are already people insisting I stop calling it a gun ban. They are wrong. It absolutely is a gun ban. Nearly every firearm that accepts a detachable magazine is now banned from purchase in Colorado. A handful of historic long guns are exempt. Recoil-operated pistols are exempt. Bolt-action rifles are exempt. Everything else is banned unless the government gives you permission to buy one. No matter what politicians call it, at the core of every permit-to-purchase scheme is a gun ban. The guns are banned first and foremost. And they stay banned for all but the most privileged. They are banned for people who can't afford hundreds of dollars to purchase their rights back. They are banned for people who can't take multiple days off work to satisfy government requirements. They are banned for people whose local sheriff decides they shouldn't have a permit based on subjective criteria, personal bias, or arbitrary judgment. They are banned for people with common names who get falsely flagged in a nationwide, name-based background check that must include both criminal and judicial records. They are banned for elderly people and people with disabilities who can't easily travel. They are banned for people who don't do well on written tests. They are banned for people with learning disabilities. They are banned for people who are deaf or hard of hearing if the required training or testing isn't reasonably accessible. They are banned for people who are blind or have significant vision impairments if they can't complete the required process. They are banned for people who don't speak English fluently if the required instruction or testing isn't available in their language. They are banned for people who can't get into a required class because there aren't enough instructors or enough seats available. They are banned for people who live hours from an approved trainer or testing site. They are banned for single parents who can't find or afford a babysitter so they can sit through a required two-day class. They are banned for people without reliable transportation. They are banned for people whose paperwork gets lost, delayed, or buried in government bureaucracy. They are banned for people who refuse to trade a constitutional right for a government permit. Every new requirement creates another group of people who are denied the ability to exercise a constitutional right, and in most cases, those people are the most underprivileged in society. Call it a permit. Call it licensing. Call it whatever you want. It's still a gun ban.

They earned it when they paid a quarter million and suffered intensely for 4 years to get the bachelor's degree. At least, that's the lie we told young people. The whole "college kids are such entitled dicks" shtick that boomers pull is tiresome. Society told them they'd be nothing unless they got the degree, so they got the degree. Some of the blame must fall at the feet of the society that asserted that. Not all, but at least some.

Nobody is refusing to work. People are refusing to perform desperation for jobs that aren't worth it. For example, say there's a job that offers $22 an hour. Sounds good. But what does it require? A bachelor's degree. 3-5 years of experience. Proficiency in seven software platforms. Availability on weekends. Willingness to travel up to 40% and a positive attitude about the open office environment. Then offers $19 after three interview rounds with benefits that kick in after 90 days. And a culture of excellence that means unpaid overtime is expected.

@Mo62G @Roach_BKK @BrendaJeanCDN @adgirlMM Medicine is a practice, genius. Years of training for predictable diseases and such with bench to bedside on the front end - Covid was a fucking wild card - you know that. Fauci was following science and practice of medicine at Dane time - he’s not going to be fucking perfect

All you need to know about Dr. Fauci is that... His boss lied to the American people about Covid being airborne. His boss politicized the wearing of masks, which could have helped save lives and protected the most vulnerable. His boss nearly died of Covid himself, but got special medical treatment the public didn't have access to. He then politicized the vaccine he helped expedite (his one singular accomplishment as "president") - then sowed distrust in Americans about the vaccine. Dr. Fauci remained steadfast in trying to save lives during all of that. Then Trump, and chintzy Republican Senators like Rand Paul tried to scapegoat him for it. Unforgivable.

@Roach_BKK @BrendaJeanCDN @adgirlMM FFS hindsight is 20-20 - he was going off what he thought was best practice at the time. Did you have better answers at the time? You? Talking about you

A record 25.2 million Americans under 35 are living with their parents. That is 33% of the entire age group. 49% of adults under 30 are living with a parent right now. Up from 37% in 2019. 70% of them are employed. They are not lazy. They are doing math that does not work. The previous record was the Great Depression. We just matched it. In what everyone keeps calling the strongest economy in history.

🚨BREAKING: On the day of his funeral, Nolan Wells’ parents sent notice to his friends and their families of intention to sue them. On top of that, moments after laying her son to rest, Nolan Wells’ mother opened his estate to pursue potential claims surrounding his death. Nolan Wells’ friends, who have faced accusations, were heartbroken to miss his funeral. However, due to death threats and out of respect for Nolan’s family, they made the difficult decision not to attend.

@LadyFrontbum @UCantBThatDumb @Samoth12 Defense budget is not trillions of dollars and is only about 13% of the total budget. Over 50% pof the budget goes to social programs and about 47% of people pay no federal income taxes.

@UCantBThatDumb @Samoth12 Look, I am all for paying taxes that go toward things like this that will potentially actually help people, as opposed to trillions of dollars to fund war, so you aren't going to sway me. You have no idea how this will go yet. Give it a chance.

"It will fail because it won't generate profit!" The purpose of food is to feed people, not to generate profit for mega corporations. "Regular grocery stores will have to compete on prices!" I thought capitalists loved financial competition?
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

At our five-borough municipal grocery stores, New Yorkers will get a 30% discount on eggs, milk, chicken, fresh produce and other everyday essentials. In the wealthiest city in the richest country in the world, no one should have to wonder how they’ll afford the food they need to feed themselves or their families.

Democrats should put together their own voter ID bill. It contains ONE thing... it demands that all voters have a specific ID that is free of charge and easily accessible. Nothing else appears in the bill... just the ID. Why? Because watch Republicans reject it 100%. It's not just about IDs, folks. It's about the two dozen other provisions in those bills. Show the public that the ID part is pure theater.
