The disciples didn’t understand a lot of what Jesus was teaching them when he was doing his ministry. That’s a theme of the Gospel. Jesus told them that they would understand it later. They grew in knowledge with further revelations after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Avery is obviously making a joke about their lack of knowledge at that point in time of Jesus’s ministry.
