With his new film, ‘I Love Boosters,’ Oakland director Boots Riley places a bet that art can fuel a mass labor movement. “We need a mass, militant, radical labor movement to affect policy change,” he tells KQED.

On this day in 1896, 130 years ago, the Supreme Court handed down Plessy v. Ferguson and gave legal sanction to the lie of “separate but equal.” That decision helped entrench racial segregation for generations. The Supreme Court has gotten it wrong before, and when it does, the consequences are profound.
In this moment, as voting rights are again being weakened, we must remember that justice cannot depend on courts alone. We must stay vigilant, organized, and committed to protecting our rights and our democracy.

The Oakland-based filmmaker Boots Riley’s zany movies, such as “Sorry to Bother You,” combine pop aesthetics with radical politics. Now his goal is to turn his new film, “I Love Boosters,” into a summer blockbuster, “a popcorn hit with a revolutionary heart,” Emily Nussbaum writes. The film is a Robin Hood story in which the Velvet Gang, a crew of shoplifting “boosters” led by an Oakland resident named Corvette (Keke Palmer), squares off with a venal, worker-exploiting, idea-stealing billionaire designer, Christie Smith, played by Demi Moore. Like all of Riley’s projects, “Boosters,” defies easy summary: it is a screwball farce, a heist flick, a sci-fi adventure, and a psychedelic social satire, double-stuffed with anti-capitalist themes.
