It is legitimate to challenge & critique Niamh Campbell’s article. There is much wrong with it, and Niamh willingly entered the debate (and she is absolutely entitled to). That can (and should) be done in a reasoned way. No one need to be experiencing rage! And, on that, I still find the “rage bait” part of the article staggering, particularly given the counter piece was designed to generate clicks and hits. It should also be noted, the Bel Tel- who Niamh works for- reported on my speech (and I welcome the fact they did, fair reporting, no issue). But I didn’t force my way into the building, seize their system and publish it onto their website. That was a choice by the Bel Tel. So who actually is it being criticised and accused of “rage-bait”? Is it being argued that unionist views that nationalists find objectionable ought to be simply labelled “rage-bait” (and who decides in this context of viewpoint policing?) and should not be aired in the public arena? I.e, is Niamh arguing that because my views on the GAA are found, by nationalists, as objectionable, they should be censored? However, the critique of Niamh’s article should never cross over into abuse. Attack the ideas, never the person. There is however a concerning trend whereby it is almost like if a woman enters debate, they should not be subject to normal challenge the way a male would, and any engagement in critique is by default “abuse”. That isn’t respecting or empowering women, it’s demeaning. Niamh is well able to debate as well as any man, and her gender has zero to do with any of this. Disappointedly however, as always with social media, there has been some comments directed toward Niamh which have crossed the line, and that is unacceptable and should stop. Niamh has always been decent with me when reporting (which is different than the partisan role of commentating), and has always sought to report fairly. In the same way, there have been comments which (every day) cross the line directed toward me. A glimpse under the article would show that. Interestingly, the self-appointed champions of policing Twitter will never call that out and in fact, there’s a really angry wee group of republican women who spend their days obsessively tweeting about me with truly comical rage and abusive social media comments. They are so consumed, anyone who even speaks to me becomes a further focus of their furious irrationality. It’s very unhealthy, and I wonder why they devote so much time and energy to doing so. In truth, some need professional help. I wouldn’t know them if they passed me in the street, so why do I consume so much of their life and trigger so much irrational rage in them, and their group chats?- it’s rather amusing. It is also important that legitimate critique and abuse aren’t treated as the same thing (as is often the case). When this is done (usually deliberately by the same people), it is not about calling out abuse, but about trying to shut down any proper debate. Finally, we are absolutely in a culture war- and the last few days has shown the true extent of nationalist supremacism which cannot countenance any alternative views, in particular in opposition to things such as the GAA, Irish language and the sectarian group Kneecap. Unionism must not be bullied into silent compliance!

Just to clarify Niamh, genuinely, are you now moving into a commentator space? This piece goes beyond your usual reporting. You’re entitled to a view as anyone else is of course. The piece however positions yourself as an ambassador for the GAA. If you’re expressing personal views on it, could you shed some light on your perspective of the multitude of GAA clubs, grounds and tournaments named after IRA killers? What’s your thoughts on the GAA Constitution containing an explicit political manifesto on the statehood of the island, and thus, how can it be inclusive of unionists or British people considering its political outlook? Even when the GAA describes sports such as football and rugby, as “imported games.” Also, the official supplier of GAA shirts often releases controversial and very political clothing? Do you think that’s wise? Helpful? Especially if that controversial clothing is being worn on university campuses? Again, do you think is a positive for the GAA? If you’re going to talk about the GAA, its fans, and the cultural challenges around it, then address why people find it controversial. Your piece avoids all of that, alsmost as if it doesn’t exist, and therefore responds to small parts of a speech which is actually referring to a larger problem.
