2GB host and born with a Diamond mine in his gob, Ben Fordham is attacking trades people who say it’s too hot to work in 35 degree plus heat. Coming from this idiot, who wouldn’t know what dirty fingernails are? I’ve ridden on a postie bike in 40 plus degrees heat, with a helmet on, for hours. It’s fucking horrendous. Trades people working on building site in 35 degree plus heat is extremely dangerous. But Fordham knows everything, from his air conditioned studio. Fuck wit.

@audavidb lol. Go to The Open in UK and then see if you feel the same way. I was there for all 4 days two years ago and I’d say the heckling is pretty even.

Victoria added 82,000 public sector jobs in one year. That is thousands per household every year. Most people cannot name what they do. Explain how this makes sense.

@TheAusInstitute @AmyRemeikis Persia I’d get rid of poker machines completely. Insidious devices designed to harvest money from the people who can least afford to lose it. But governments are hooked on that revenue. It is outrageous the universal support for the impoverishment of Australians.

@TheAusInstitute @AmyRemeikis Maybe tax multinationals and minerals exporters fairly. Also, much more revenue. How about getting rid of trusts and other types of tax evasion. While you’re at it, tax the commercial operations of faux NFP’s.

A 1.4% levy on the gambling industry could compensate the media for ALL revenue lost from a potential gambling advertising ban. Australians lose more money gambling than any other country. It's time for our governments to act. @AmyRemeikis #auspol

I’m actually really surprised to learn that for the United States that bangs on so much about Christianity that Good Friday and Easter Monday are not federally mandated public holidays for the whole country 🤔 Here in Australia the whole country gets a 4 day long weekend, and those who have to work get paid penalty rates for it.

What an insane and embarrassing situation for Sydney racing, that we have Doncaster/Derby Day, the premier meeting of the year, but almost all corporate bookmakers hide behind the MBL rule and refuse to lay a bet, even to lose a paltry $2000. It defies any logical analysis. The regulators must either be so bereft of racing knowledge or so utterly in the pocket of the corporate lobbyists. They have willingly laid waste to the greatest betting market in the world and turned it into one giant poker machine.

@BillyCarruther3 @newstart_2024 You’ve just described a super AI future. What do you do with people when there are no jobs? Right now, one person in the US has more wealth than 53% of the entire population. That only gets worse. Tell me how you will fix it.

It’s a pipe dream Inflation will basically wipe out the value of UBI It’s essentially communism for the masses whilst the elites live in luxury There will be no functioning society. Motivation and purpose gets removed. People will retreat to an online world and likely drugs of some sort. Government prescribed Soma type stuff Totally dystopian Without a common held belief system it will end like all other communist societies… A cannibalised society with no anchor and absolute chaos It kinda seems we’re halfway down that path already

During the pandemic, Australia ran what some researchers called a “natural experiment” in universal basic income. With JobKeeper and the Coronavirus Supplement, between 3.6 and 4 million people received direct payments, and another 2.2 million had their welfare payments effectively doubled — at a total cost of nearly $110 billion. Poverty rates for some groups dropped dramatically (from 67% to just 7% in one study), and many reported regaining dignity and being able to re-enter the workforce. Now, with AI rapidly changing the job market, the idea of a universal basic income is back in the conversation. The ABC piece explores both sides: the potential benefits seen in trials (including a major 12-year study in Kenya showing reduced child deaths, lower domestic violence, and increased local economic activity), versus the very real concerns about cost, long-term dependency, and how people might actually spend unconditional cash. It’s a timely reminder that as technology disrupts work faster than ever, we’re going to have to seriously debate how society supports people when traditional jobs become scarce. What do you think — could a form of universal basic income be a necessary safety net in an AI-driven future, or does the idea carry too many risks and unknowns?

@MollymookMick Governments still use the hypothecation (which hasn’t existed in decades) as the rationale for taxes on EVs. That’s the point. Governments don’t need to tax to have money. But if people want to play that game, they could cancel one nuclear submarine and have oodles to spare.

The upcoming EV tax in Australia is sold under the usual narrative that fuel excise funds roads, and EV’s are therefore free-loading. The link between fuel excise and road funding (hypothecation) was formally severed almost 35 years ago, in 1992. Annual spending on roads in Australia currently runs at about 3 times the annual fuel excise. Much of the burden falls on States and local Councils, through additional taxes, charges and rates.
