I am very supportive of protecting our natural heritage. It should come tied with the expansion of recreational opportunities. More trails, campgrounds, roadside attractions/pull offs. More small pockets of conservation where Canadians are and travel through. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation does this very well. I think that is a model we should look towards—and nationally designating some multi-day hikes as “Great Walks” in our national parks. These investments do promote tourism—especially to rural areas—and catalyses private investment and expansion to serve tourists. There are towns that otherwise might not exist if it weren’t for the tourism enabled by conservation. Val Marie in southern Saskatchewan has largely been supported by Grasslands National Park, for example. People care more about conservation when they get to experience the natural environment, enjoy the associated amenities, and benefit from it. For example, Anglers, hunters, canoeists, and hikers are (obviously) some of the strongest supporters of conservation. Conservation has intrinsic value. There is also significant economic value in conservation, if we choose to pursue it.
