One of the more shameless tricks in media is publishing a headline that says so-and-so, particularly someone controversial, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
It's almost always empty clickbait of some variety, and people tend to take it way too seriously.
Let me explain...
The Nobel Peace Prize doesn't have a limited number of nominees. There are no announced finalists. Anyone can be nominated.
Last year, there were 351 nominations submitted. All of them, regardless of merit, were automatically considered candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Why were there so many? Because there are literally tens of thousands of people across numerous categories who are eligible to nominate a candidate.
For example, any member of a national assembly in any country is an eligible nominator. Thus, every Member of Congress is eligible to nominate someone.
Marjorie Taylor-Greene can submit a nomination, and it will be accepted.
That goes for every country. Any given Putin stooge in the Russian Federal Assembly? Any Kim Jong-un lackey in the North Korean Supreme People's Assembly? All are eligible to submit a nomination.
That's not even the biggest category. Every professor or associate professor in history, social sciences, philosophy, law, and theology in the entire world is an eligible nominator.
The only real barrier stopping frivolous and nonsensical nominations is the risk of public shame, and even then, it's not much of a barrier.
Because nothing about any given year's nominations (aside from reporting the total number of nominations each year) is revealed by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for at least 50 years.
Now, the Committee does put together an internal shortlist of nominees, but again, that will not be revealed for at least 50 years.
Thus, we don't really know until that time who was considered a serious contender by the Committee in any given year.
Moreover, the only way we know a specific nomination has been made is because a nominator reveals their nominee to the public, usually for political reasons.
Again: there are no actual qualifications to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, and if you can convince (or bribe) one of the tens of thousands of eligible nominators to put forward your name, you'll officially be a candidate.
So, when you see a lazy-ass headline about someone having been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, take a breath and remember that there's an excellent chance it's clickbait.
