I left Fracton Ventures, where I had been working since 2022.
Now that things in my personal life have settled down a bit, I want to write down my latest updates.
In fact, since 2024 I’ve been running a company called imi (pronounced “imi,” written in lowercase. I never made any formal public announcement, but I did let people I worked with know). At imi, under the theme of “expressing pluriverse,” we mainly produce artworks, and organize exhibitions and events. My motivation for founding imi comes from a deep desire to express the awe I felt toward Ethereum.

In recent years, I’ve noticed that even people who don’t know Ethereum in detail often share “Ethereum-like” values. I wanted those people to also feel the same sense of wonder I experienced. By reinterpreting Ethereum in my own way, I’ve been challenging myself to express how it might be positioned in society beyond just internet and tech contexts.
Some examples of our activities at imi include exhibiting work for the first time at the Sumida Mukojima EXPO art festival, and winning an award in an art contest organized by Optimism. In Sep 2024, on the 10th of the passing of Hirofumi Uzawa—known for advocating the concept of social common capital—we organized and ran a conference together with the Uzawa Kokusai Gakkan, which continues his work.

So last year, I co-founded imi and I was running imi activities in parallel with my work at Fracton. Although I’ve left Fracton, I’ll continue the R&D around public goods as imi, now under a nonprofit I co-founded called Beacon Labs. We’ve already announced this in a press release, so please check that out.

At Beacon Labs, our aim is to research and develop systems that can “respect plural values and effectively support digital public goods in a fair and convincing way.” Through both creative expression and R&D, I hope to share my worldview with you.
That’s a quick status update.
Since it’s a good opportunity, I’d also like to share some reflections on what I’ve done so far, what I’m doing now, and what I plan to do next. Honestly, I don’t love when people write this kind of thing—it often feels like empty self-narration, and I usually don’t want to read it. But over the past few years I’ve done so many different things that from the outside it might seem inconsistent. I want to show that my activities actually are continuous and consistent, and I hope this serves as a kind of self-introduction in 2025.

> First, let me briefly share how I came to be interested in crypto. Back in university, I wanted to work on something that would endure for the long term. At the time, I thought public infrastructure and public policy would last the longest, so I aimed to become a bureaucrat. But around that time I discovered blockchain—the technology underlying Bitcoin and Ethereum —and I realized it was more compelling than the idea of working as a bureaucrat. A blockchain is a network (or virtual computer built on such a network) with no central administrator, theoretically unstoppable, and highly public in nature. I came to believe that being involved in building and developing blockchain could mean contributing to a lasting global infrastructure and economic system. That’s why I decided to enter this field, and here I am today.

As I’ve mentioned in this article, my desire to work on something like eternity naturally led me to Ethereum. At the time, the startup boom was in full swing—new services kept popping up and disappearing. Watching that cycle made me feel hollow, and I longed for something permanent. (That said, Web3 also has its own impermanence, which is one reason I don’t like using the term “Web3.”)
What first drew me to Ethereum was the emotional impact it had on me. Applications built on Ethereum can, in principle, exist without arbitrary alteration while continuing to upgrade daily. It seemed to me like a mix of the permanence of physical laws and the dynamism of living organisms. Humanity had created something akin to eternal physical laws that also constantly evolve—this struck me deeply.
If you’ve seen Ethereum’s early website, you’ll remember the phrase “Build unstoppable applications.” Vitalik Buterin has even said he regretted not naming smart contracts “Persistent Scripts” instead. In other words, Ethereum can be interpreted as a machine for producing code that endures forever.
To me, “something like eternity” are inherently public. And compared to the public goods provided by the state, Ethereum felt even more public.
✅Now
Since beginning R&D on digital public goods, I’ve been meeting different types of people outside the crypto scene—civic tech folks, scientists, local community players, municipal officials, administrators. Let’s call them collectively the “public goods community.”
Because I originally had an interest in public works, the buzzword “Web3” helped me connect with this world. In a way, I felt like I’d come full circle back to my original path of wanting to be a bureaucrat. It also made me feel my first intuition about blockchain had been right.
Our analytical reports—comparing different grant programs for digital public goods—were internationally recognized, and I was invited to present at Devcon SEA (which I consider something like the Olympics of Ethereum). I also received funding from Optimism and Public Nouns. This gave me a sense that I was meaningfully contributing to Ethereum’s ecosystem.

In Japan, I helped organize events like Plurality Tokyo (2023) and Funding the Commons Tokyo (2024), bringing Ethereum into contact with existing public-goods players and expanding its role in civic contexts.
Currently, I’m co-planning a popup village with Paramita and Code for Japan as a practical site for building resilient infrastructure, connecting digital off-grid (like Ethereum) with physical off-grid systems. I want to help Ethereum and the real world blend, reinterpret, and uplift each other.
But sometimes I wonder:
“If my university self saw me now, would he be moved?”
Sure, I’ve found fulfillment in contributing to public works within the digital public goods sphere. But what truly drew me to Ethereum wasn’t its utility—it was the sheer emotional impact of its existence. I didn’t fall in love with Ethereum because it was a new tool for governance, but because its very being astonished me. That raw emotional spark is what I now want to express and share—both with people who already share Ethereum-like values and those who know nothing about it.

That’s the background behind founding imi.
I’m dedicating myself to expressing the paradoxical nature of Ethereum—enduring and immutable yet constantly evolving. I won’t go into specifics about imi’s future projects here; I’d rather show them through my work. When I do write about them, it’ll be with weighty words worth the wait. For now, please watch warmly.
At Funding the Commons Tokyo and Devcon SEA, many attendees weren’t deeply familiar with Ethereum. That made me feel Ethereum is more than just a technology—it’s a value system at its core. There’s “something” about it that draws people in. Whether it’s the same thing I felt or not, I believe it’s rooted in the same shock and wonder I once experienced. Through imi, I want to reinterpret Ethereum, abstract those values, and express that “something” that draws people together.
Of course, I’ll continue my R&D on digital public goods. That’s the more practical side, and we’re deep in development. The focus is on impact evaluation and measurement, aiming to bring evidence-based practice (EBP) into the realm of digital public goods. I’ll be able to share more soon—please look forward to it.
From now on, I’ll work on two fronts: as an artist and as a researcher. But art and science share the same roots: techne in Greek, ars in Latin. At their origin, they were both simply “human endeavors.” So in that sense, I may not actually be doing two different things at all. Especially since culture itself is a kind of public good, my work in both areas feels closely connected.
Finally, I began this journey because I no longer felt a sense of publicness in the nation-state, the symbol of modernism. But at the same time, the chaotic “anything goes” of postmodernism felt empty to me. So perhaps what I’m seeking is a “new public”, "a new modernism", "a new grand narrative", and "a new universal value(I mean plural value though)". I can’t yet put that into my own words, so for now I borrow terms like “Ethereum,” “digital public goods,” “Plurality,” and “d/acc.” Finding my own words for that “something” feels like the true core of my work.
At the very least, I sense that the Ethereum-like values that once moved me will remain at the center. Through both art and research—the primal human endeavors that have advanced civilization—I want to explore a “new narrative.”

2022年より活動していたFracton Venturesを辞めました。
色々と身辺が一段落ついたので、近況報告させてください。
実は、2024年からimi（読み方は「イミ」、表記は小文字）という会社を立ち上げて、活動していました（特に、改まって公に報告することはありませんでしたが、仕事をする上でご一緒された方にはお伝えしていました）。imiでは、「多元的世界の表現」を掲げて、主にアート作品の制作、展覧会やイベントの企画・運営などを行っています。imiを立ち上げようと思った動機としては、僕がEthereumに対して感じた感動を表現したいと思ったことが根底にあります。詳しい動機は、後述します。

近年、Ethereumに対して詳しくないけど、Ethereum的な価値観を持っている人たちがたくさんいるなと感じることが増え、その人たちにEthereumに対して感動を覚えてもらいたいなという気持ちが芽生えていました。Ethereumを僕なりに再解釈し、インターネットやテクノロジーの分野を超えて社会の文脈としてどのような位置付けになるのかを模索しながら表現に挑んでいます。
imiでの活動も一部を紹介すると、すみだ向島EXPOという芸術祭で初めて作品を展示させてもらったり、Optimismが主催のアートコンテスト「We Love the Art」で入賞したりなど作品制作と発表を行っています。また、昨年2024年9月に社会的共通資本を提唱したことで知られている宇沢弘文が没後10年が経ったことを機にカンファレンスを開催し、社会的共通資本の普及活動を行っている宇沢国際学館とともに、そのカンファレンスの企画・運営をしていました。

という訳で、昨年はFractonの活動と並行しながら、imiを立ち上げて活動していました。Fractonを辞めると言っても、Fractonのときに行っていた公共財周りの研究開発は、また別で立ち上げた非営利団体Beacon Labsでimiとして貢献する形で、活動を継続をしていきます。すでにプレスリリースで報告されているので、そちらもご覧になってください。

Beacon Labsでは、「多元的な価値を尊重し、デジタル公共財を公平かつ納得感をもって効果的に支援できる仕組み」の構築を目指して研究開発を行っていきます。より僕自身が考える世界観の体現を創作・表現活動と研究開発活動を通じてみなさんにお届けできたらと思っています。
ここまでは簡単な近況報告をさせてもらいました。
せっかくなので、この機会にこれまでのこと、今やってること、これからやろうとしていることとかを書き記させてください。僕個人としては、こういうことを書く人のことはあまり好きじゃないし、読んでいても中身を感じない一人語りのような文章で読む気が失せるので、正直乗り気ではないです。ですが、ここ数年色々なことをし過ぎて客観的に一貫性がないように思われてるのかなと感じることがあるので、僕の活動は地続きで一貫性があるということを2025年時点での自己紹介代わりになると良いなと思ってるので冗長的に綴らせてください。一旦、僕が大学生の頃まで遡らせてください。約5、6年前。
✅Then / それまで
> まず、そもそも僕がクリプトに関心を持った背景について簡単にお話ができたらと思います。僕が大学の頃、将来仕事として長く残り続けるものに携わりたいなと思っていました。当時比較的長く残り続けるのは公共的なインフラや公共政策だと思って官僚を目指していましたが、同じ頃にBitcoinといった暗号資産(仮想通貨)の技術基盤として知られているブロックチェーン技術に出会い、官僚としての仕事よりもブロックチェーンの方が魅力的に思うようになりました。ブロックチェーンという特定の管理者や運営者が存在せずに理論上止まることのないネットワーク(もしくは、そのネットワークを基盤とした仮想コンピュータ)は、より長く残り続けるような世界的なインフラであり、さらに公共性が非常に高いと感じ、ブロックチェーン領域の発展や構築に携わることになって、より長く残り続けるような社会インフラや経済システムを構築ができると考えるようになり、ブロックチェーン業界に携わることを決めて今に至ります。

この記事でも言及してた通り、大学生の頃から「長く残り続けるもの」に携わりたいと思い、Ethereumエコシステムに関わるようになりました。というのも当時は、スタートアップが流行していて、新しいサービスが生まれては消えてを繰り返しているのを見てて虚しい気持ちになったので、永続的なものを欲してたのかもしれません（尤も、「Web3」には盛者必衰の側面を感じます。僕が「Web3」という言葉を使いたくない理由の1つです）。
そもそもEthereumに魅力を持ったきっかけが、Ethereumに感動したからにあります。EthereumとEthereumによって生み出されるアプリケーションは、原則的に恣意的に改変されずに存在し続け、一方で日々アップグレードが行われ続けることから、物理法則のような不変さと生き物のような動的さを兼ね備えているように思えました。人などの主体によって、永続的に残り続ける物理法則のようなものを生み出し、それを支える主体によって、常に変化し続ける。このような特異な性質をもったオブジェクトがこの世に存在、いや人間が生み出した所業に感動をしました。
皆さんはEthereumの初期のウェブサイトを見たことはあるでしょうか？初期のウェブサイトには、「Build unstoppable application」という記載があります。また、EthereumのCo-founderのVitalikがスマートコントラクトという名称ではなく、「Persistent Scripts（永続的なスクリプト）」にすれば良かったと後悔している旨の発言もしています。つまり、Ethereumの本質は、「永遠に残り続けるコード」を生み出すための装置だと解釈できると考えています。
僕にとっては、「長く残り続けるもの」とは公共性が高いものであり、国家が提供する公共よりもEthereumが提供する公共がより公共に感じた所以です。
✅Now / 今
デジタル公共財に関する研究開発（Researchとは言いたくない。日本語の文脈では「インサイト」を見出す「研究」という意味よりも「調べ物」のニュアンスが近いと感じるから。）をするようになってから、いわゆるクリプト界隈とは違ったタイプの人たちと交流する機会が増えました。シビックテック、科学者、ローカルのプレイヤー、地方自治体、行政関係者など（以下、わかりやすく「公共財界隈」と呼ぶことにします）。元々、公共事業に関心を持ってEthereumに関わっていた僕としては、「Web3」というバズワードのおかげもあって、公共財界隈の方がEthereumや僕の活動に関心を持っていただき、結果的に元々官僚を目指してたときと同じリアルワールドでの公共事業に戻ってきた感がありました。僕が始めEthereumに抱いてた直感は正しかったなと感じるようになりました。
デジタル公共財に関する研究活動では異なる助成金プログラムを定量比較した分析レポートが国際的に評価していただき、Ethereum Foundation主催のDevcon SEA（Devconはスポーツ選手で言うところのオリンピックぐらいに思ってる聖地だと思ってる）で発表することに繋がり、OptimismやPublic Nounsから研究費も割いていただいたりと、自分もEthereumエコシステムの発展に貢献できていると実感でき、有意義なものでした。

また、日本国内の公共財界隈とともPlurality Tokyo（2023年）やFunding the Commons Tokyo（2024年）を開催することにも繋がり、Ethereumエコシステムを範疇を超え、Ethereumと既存のプレイヤーとの接点となるような機会に携わることができて、より公共領域に貢献できるようになっていました。
現在、Ethereumを始めとしたデジタルなオフグリッドと一般的なフィジカルなオフグリッドを通して、レジリエンスな社会のためのインフラを作っていく実践的な場としてのポップアップビレッジをparamitaやCode for Japanの方々と一緒に企画をしています。Ethereumとリアルワールドが接続し、融け合い、再解釈されてアウフヘーベンされていくことに貢献していきたいと思っています。
ただ、ふと思ったのは
「今、自分がやっていることを大学生の頃の自分が見たら感動するだろうか？」
確かに、僕が興味があった「長く残り続けるもの」に携わるということに関しては、Ethereumという新しいデジタル公共財領域における公共事業に貢献できていることに充実していました。しかし、僕がEthereumの魅力に引き込まれたのは、Ethereumに対して強烈に感動したからです。僕はEthereumが人々のコーディネーションの仕組みに有効だから、統治のための新しい技術だからといったユースケースに感動した訳ではなく、Ethereumの存在そのもの、存在するに至った背景に感動しているのであって、実用性や社会的な意義を頭で理解するよりも先行した心で感動したのです。僕は、大学生時代の自分が感じた衝撃や感動を表現し、Ethereum的な価値観を有している人たちに届けたり、Ethereumを知らない方にEthereum的な価値観を知ってもらいたいなと思うようになりました。
✅Future / これから
これがimiを立ち上げるに至った背景になります。
僕がEthereumに感じている永続的で不変的だが、変化をし続けるとい矛盾している存在に感動を覚えたことを胸に表現に勤しみます。imiで具体的にやりたいことを書くのは、シャバすぎるのでここでは割愛します。作品で魅せていきたいと思っているので。文章で書く場合も満を持して書くくらいのゴツい文章にするので、しばらくは暖かく見守っていてください。
Funding the Commons TokyoやDevcon SEAでは、Ethereumに精通していない人も多く来場されました。これは、EthereumがEthereumというテクノロジーの枠組みを超えて、Ethereumという価値観が中心にあるように感じました。つまり、公共財界隈の人たちを惹きつける「何か」があるのだと思っています。それは僕が感じたものと同じものなのか違うものなのかはわかりませんが、その根源は僕がEthereumに感じた感動や衝撃に繋がるのだと考えています。僕は、imiでEthereumを再解釈して、Ethereum「的な」価値観を抽象化して、皆を惹きつける「何か」を表現していきます。
もちろん、デジタル公共財に関する研究開発も続けます。こっちはすごく実用的なプロジェクトで、絶賛開発中です。よりインパクト評価・測定に焦点を当てて、EBP（evidence based practice）をデジタル公共財の領域で実践できるようなプロダクトを開発していきます。もうしばらくすると発表できるので、楽しみにお待ちください。
これからは芸術家的な側面と研究者的な側面の二つの面で活動をしていきます。二つの面とは言っても、元々芸術（Art）と科学（Science）は同じ語源だったんですよね：テクネー（Techne）、アルス（Ars）。根源は「同じ人間の業」だった訳なので、僕の動機を辿れば結局は同じことをしているのかもしれません。というか文化という公共財において、持続的な繁栄を促すような活動もしていきたいので、重なる部分は大きいなと思っています。
最後に、砂金思うこととしては、僕は国家という「モダニズム」の象徴に対して、公共性を感じなくなったところから始まりましたが、一方でポストモダン的なカオスで何でもありのような世界に対しても虚しさを感じています。そのため、僕は従来のモダニズムやポストモダニズムではなく、「新しい公共」、つまり「新しいモダニズム」「新しい大きな物語」「新しい普遍的な価値観」を求めているのかもしれません。それが「何か」は今の僕には言い表すことができないので「Ethereum」「デジタル公共財」「Plurality」「d/acc」といった他人が作った言葉を引用して妥協しています。僕の言葉でその「何か」を探求することが、僕自身の活動の軸であるとより感じています。少なくとも、僕に感動を与えてくれたEthereum(的な価値観)がその中心になる予感を感じています。芸術と研究という文明を発展させたプリミティブな人間の所業を通じて「新しい物語」を探求していきます。
