Every day, one million animals are killed on American roads.
It costs us $8 billion a year.
Wildlife overpasses are proven to fix this.
They are bridges, covered in soil, native plants, and sometimes trees that span highways and allow animals to cross safely.
They've been common in Europe since the 1950s, and the US has over 1,000 of them built now.
The data is extraordinary: in Banff National Park, 44 crossings along the Trans-Canada Highway reduced large mammal collisions by 80% and elk and deer collisions by 96%.
In Arizona, one stretch of highway saw a 90% drop in wildlife collisions after crossings were installed.
Animals are 146% more likely to use a crossing than attempt a random highway crossing.
One overpass in Arizona was used over 6,000 times by bighorn sheep, bobcats, deer, and coyotes.
They cost $5-15 million each.
Why aren't we building thousands a year?

Adult male Lesser Kestrel at the steppe area close to Pinoso. This shows the pale grey panel along the wings and the unmarked chestnut mantle. Shame the females are not so easy! Beautiful raptors. #birds #birding #birdphotography #birdsseenin2026 #naturephotography

Not seen many #squirrels today & thinking there was no one there I went out & started sweeping. A thud from the neighbour's lean to roof & Mama squirrel was quite clear I should get back in the house. She had not finished her supper. Bossy squirrel. #squirrelscrolling
