A 4th grade student told me she wants to find a field that gives grownups 2 recess periods a day. She outlined a lot of compelling reasons, including, “people just need time to think about fun stuff.” Now all I can think about is starting a recess for grownups movement.

School administrators can’t build culture by themselves… but they can certainly set the right tone. And that tone is: 1) The administration supports the teachers. 2) The teachers collaborate to support the students. 3) We’re all gonna have fun doing it.

Tips for staff meetings next year. *Streamline them as much as possible. *If it can be emailed, email it, but not after 5:00pm. *If someone can say or do it better, let them lead. *Meetings should serve a purpose, not just for sake of meeting. Have itinerary. * Celebrate success!

Let’s not forget that the end of the year can be a scary time for some students. The fear of moving on to a different school(or graduating). Boredom during summer. And for more than we know, school is their safe space with caring adults.
