Recently my department have really focused on improving reading fluency and comprehension (also a whole school focus). It was great to receive some positive feedback on this in a recent Ofsted deep-dive. Here are some strategies we have been using - THREAD:

4. As you go through the answers (using choral responses) you can stop to question students further for that deeper understanding. ‘Why was that false?’ ‘What word would need changing to make the statement correct?’ Etc

3. Choral responses. This task is perfect for using whole class choral responses. I count down from 3 then ask all students to give their answer aloud. There are only two possible answers, which lowers the stakes and keeps it simple - but you’d expect a very high success rate.

Lots of good ideas of reading strategies in geography being shared by @MrCWilson4. Really like the idea of giving students the text before they know the task to make them really focus on the text as a whole rather than just answering a question #tmgeog @geogicons

@mikebwtaylor Thank you - glad it’s useful. We have pre-planned opportunities for deliberate practice integrated into the schemes of learning. Students therefore get chance to work on their targets multiple times before the next assessed task

@MrCWilson4 That is really useful. How do you know teachers are responsive to this assessment and facilitate the use of the feedback? This is really hard for teachers to do, so zouke be good to know how you ensure teachers are getting better at it.

Recently in my department we have been refining our approach to assessment and feedback. There is still some work to do on this, but we received some great feedback in our recent Ofsted deep dive and have seen improved results. A few examples of strategies here. THREAD:
