MR M History

Has anyone specifically in Wales created any ‘Schemes of Learning’. The scheme of learning is basically a SoW and lesson plans all in one document. I’m having to link every lesson to the principles of learning, integral skills and how each lesson & task links to skills.

After a delayed start to the academic year for myself, I’m just refreshing the old expectations power point. Any excuse to get LOTR in. Anyone guess what point I’m getting across with this scene?

⏩Been thinking carefully about the underlying principles of teaching for learning and how to link them to a framework.

Never been ready for half term so much. Estyn has completely zapped me and any motivation I have right now 🤦🏻‍♂️ roll on tomorrow!

@HollyTurts @MrThorntonTeach How do you find this works? My current policy is we find 3 pieces of spelling and grammar per piece of work, every two weeks. This is so time consuming when I have 14 sets of books to mark! Especially when I don’t find it has much of an impact on literacy etc

@MrMHistorian @MrThorntonTeach I do something similar but just on a ppt. Flick through a few books and make a list of areas to improve. Give time in class to fix.

Does anyone have any examples of whole class feedback that they feel works well for them? I’m finding that pupils are spelling the same words wrong in January that they were in December despite my marking picking them up. Surely there’s a better and more impactful way?

What strategies has your school or even at department level have been implemented to try and improve outcomes for FMS pupils or PP for those England? Very interested to see if one strategy has had an impact.

Can any fellow historians point me in the direction of any booklets that pupils can complete independently?

@EHP89 @MrMHistorian @TTRHistory I think that there are some factors affecting PP students which are even harder to address eg attendance and lack of aspiration. They hit us badly last year. But a focus on vocab gives them more of a chance. And actually seems to have benefited all students, esp SEND. The End!!!

Very disappointed in the WJEC GCSE History spec course. Zero opportunity to ask live questions. Was also scheduled until 5pm and they end it just after 4. I think they have definitely got a sense of what we all think!

No textbooks available for the WJEC GCSE History Spec! What an absolute joke!

@LankyDormers Every ounce of time is dedicated to something now. Every tutor morning has to have a session to literacy numeracy etc. Wish it was as simple as talking to the pupils and checking in!

@MrMHistorian And does in many schools who have this. But also giving form tutors time to do their job and do it well

@LankyDormers A good point! Was just saying to a colleague having a dedicated non-teaching pastoral lead for each year group would work wonders!!

@MrMHistorian The answer is pastorally. The cause of the inequality is social, so the "solution" is pastoral. Tutors every morning checking equipment and supplying stuff; making sure children aren't hungry, have coats, PE Kit etc.

@MrMHistorian It is so tough. Sorry I couldn’t give anything more specific. I went to a great talk by @snevetsr about closing the disadvantage gap at ResearchEd the other week who recommended Potential Plus resources and research.
