Air purifiers in Finnish daycare reduced children's illnesses by 18% in a carefully controlled study. This implies huge potential for better public health and cost savings from sick leaves, with a simple intervention against airborne infections. yle.fi/a/74-20089670

This is *VERY* exciting news. Summer youth employment programs are one of the things we KNOW work to reduce violence. It's awesome to see a state-level commitment to scale this evidence-backed public safety policy. cbs6albany.com/news/local/nea…

I will start year 33/34 as a full-time classroom teacher next week. Late summer and the start of school always make me reflect on my many years of teaching and this year is no different. I've been thinking a lot about what I've learned from all the classes, students, lessons, PDs, and the mindless minutia of education in America. I've had this list for about 3 years, it's changed and grown. Here's the latest iteration of "What I've Learned from Teaching Teens." 1. Never lie to the kids. Someone once told me that kids can smell BS a mile away, and it’s true. Tell the truth. 2. Build a culture of learning, be eager to teach new things. It’s infectious. Kids gravitate to the authentic. 3. Learn kids' names and then use them often. 4. Learn to say kids' names the way their parents do unless the student prefers another. 5. Number your assignments in the assignment names for the entire year. You’ll thank me later for this one. 6. Kids will surprise you if you pay attention. They’re sorta amazing. 7. They are kids and do shit kids do. It’s not personal, so don’t take it that way. 8. If the kids get curious about something, then follow that curiosity. It’s where the most effective learning happens. 9. Let them think they are pulling you off task and they will be curious all the time. 10. Don’t fart in class #TeachersTwitter #TeacherTwitter #education
