Common people around us have a general perception that.. PhDs or in general researchers do nothing.. I always say, Whatever technology we use today has been the thesis topic for many PhDs. #phd #thesiswriting #phdvoice

We don’t realise how fortunate we are in India to have one of the world’s most efficient passport processes. In few countries will you get a new passport in a couple of days At least in Delhi, the passport offices have actually got more citizen-friendly over the last year

@mnwsth Pls make a similar analysis for the salary of Prof in India? Without having a zero funding, still they get paid more than 2 lakhs/month. Or ur analysis is only for students who make 37k/month

An *in-hand* stipend of INR 37K / month in India, adjusted for PPP translates to USD 1765 (post tax), which is very good for the US, even by current standards. We can keep debating whether we should call this a salary or a stipend, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still a very decent amount for a PhD stipend. The issues that cause students to not enroll in Indian PhD programs lie elsewhere. That said, the institutions which are paying 8K INR / month to PhD students need to up their game, which I understand is also contingent on fund allocations for this specific purpose (stipends). And that is why we need Education Ministers at the Center and the States who understand these nuances. * Used [1] to get PPP numbers: [1] chrislross.com/PPPConverter/

Please remember that PhD stipends are not salaries. They were never intended to be. In essence, PhDs are paid apprenticeships. You get paid a stipend while you learn the tools of the trade, the trade in this case being research, and how to do it. That said, there is definitely an opportunity cost to every PhD. If you decide to do a PhD, in the typical case, you forego some of your best earning years of your life.

@alokiitb Unlike PhD, being a faculty member is a full-time job. Subsidised, on-campus housing is one of the perks of that job. So no, they are not the same.

I am all for paying higher stipends, but I maintain that ₹37K is not a bad stipend, especially if students get on-campus subsidised housing and food, and aren’t charged significant tuition. The bigger problems are 1 - Uniformity of stipends: some state, central and private universities pay next to nothing as stipends. That has to stop. 2 - Whatever money has promised has to get to the students accounts on time. Not a day later. 3 - The research culture, except for a handful of places, is terrible. Students come in to just get a degree and are not interested (or know about) research, PIs churn out PhD graduates who have been woefully trained. It’s still top heavy and hierarchical for ideas to be debated openly. This is in addition to other things that multiple people have raised over the years - more research funding by the government, better distribution of those funds across institutions and timely release of funds by agencies with reduced bureaucracy.

Advice to students going for PhD.. Never ever get impressed by the advisor in the first meeting 🤣.. Look for publications, years required and where graduate students are going.. Give priority to supervisor over Institute #phd #phdvoice #science

Suffering due to lack of scientific curiosity, madness, smartness and dedication among PhD students. They just want to produce data as I say or minimum requires for publication in "any" journal. It's only me or it is happening with other PIs as well?
