His name was Manjunath Shanmugam. He was an IIM Lucknow graduate. He got a job with Indian Oil Corporation as a sales officer. His territory was Uttar Pradesh. He found that petrol pump dealers were adulterating fuel and cheating customers. He reported it. He sealed the pumps. On November 19 2005 a petrol pump owner shot him dead outside his office. He was 27 years old. The killers were convicted. Sentenced to life imprisonment. His parents did not get compensation for 15 years. His college created the Manjunath Shanmugam Trust in his name to fight corruption. Some men die because they refused to look the other way. India forgets them too quickly.

After 12 years in NAMs n 16 in MechBio, I increasingly view “NAMs” better framed as AIMs (Adv In Vitro Models). Basic biomed researchers shd consider integrating Perfusion, tissue relevant 3D architecture, strain etc into their cell culture 2 obtain physiologically relevant data.

Took visiting relatives to my lab today. One (age 47) asked, “So when will these research reach the market?” Other (age 75) replied: “Out of 100 discoveries, maybe 1 reaches society. But without the other 99, that 1 wouldn’t exist.” Neither is from research background.

Kudos, Nikhil Naz, for exposing the farce that was Lionel Messi's India tour. The cost of this tour was Rs. 120 crore. At the same time, India's national football league stands suspended because nobody is willing to shell out Rs. 35 crore.

24 फरवरी 1988, मुंबई का आज़ाद मैदान। दोपहर की धूप ज़रा तेज़ थी, भीड़ में शोर था, और मैदान के बीच दो लड़के इतिहास लिख रहे थे। एक चौदह साल का, दूसरा सोलह का। बॉलर आते रहे, गेंदें गायब होती रहीं, और स्कोरबोर्ड मानो थककर रुक जाना चाहता था। 664 !!!! एक विश्व रिकॉर्ड बन चुका था। पूरा मैदान बस दो नाम पुकार रहा था! सचिन तेंदुलकर और विनोद कांबली। लेकिन मैदान की रेखा के उस पार, एक और लड़का था जो पैड पहने, हेलमेट लगाए, अपनी बारी का इंतज़ार करता हुआ। वो देख रहा था, कैसे इतिहास बन रहा है, और कैसे उसका नाम उसमें नहीं है। उस दिन वो नहीं खेल पाया, और शायद ज़िंदगी ने वहीं तय कर लिया था कि ये लड़का हमेशा थोड़ा इंतज़ार करेगा। वो बड़ा हुआ शिवाजी पार्क की मिट्टी में, जहाँ क्रिकेट ही धर्म था और बल्ला ही दीक्षा। रामाकांत आचरेकर की सख़्त निगाहों के नीचे उसने वही सीखा जो बाकी चूके थे और वो था अटल धैर्य! आगे चलकर उस बालक ने पहले ही मैच में मुंबई के लिए 260 रन ठोके। दो दशक तक मैदान उसका घर रहा। 11,000 से ज़्यादा रन, 30 शतक, औसत करीब 48 किन्तु..... हर साल वो बस इंतजार करता रहा। हर साल लोग कहते, “अगला वही है, इंडिया की जर्सी उसी को मिलेगी।” पर वो फोन कभी नहीं आया। दूसरे बुलाए गए, उसके सामने न जाने कितने आये, हीरो बने और चले गए। उसने बस खेलना जारी रखा। ना शिकायत, ना अफ़सोस।वो सिर्फ मुस्कुराता रहा और इंतजार करता रहा। आख़िरकार साल 2014 में उसने अपना बल्ला रख दिया, पर खेल से नहीं जा पाया। अब वो कोच बन चुका था। पहले मुंबई का, फिर आंध्र का, फिर राजस्थान रॉयल्स का। वो स्ट्रोक नहीं सुधारता था, सोच सुधारता था। हर खिलाड़ी को सिखाता ,“दुनिया भले भूल जाए, तुम तैयार रहो।” फिर 2023 में, किस्मत ने आख़िरकार दस्तक दी। भारतीय महिला क्रिकेट टीम की कमान उसके हाथ में आई। कई लोगों ने तब यही कहा था “जिसने इंडिया के लिए नहीं खेला, वो कोच कैसे बनेगा?” वो मुस्कराया, वही पुरानी मुस्कान , जिसमें जवाब नहीं, सुकून था। 2025 वर्ल्ड कप शुरू हुआ तो हालात अच्छे नहीं थे। मैच हारे, कैच छूटे, भरोसा डगमगाया। वो चुपचाप टीम के बीच बैठा और बस एक लाइन कही, “हम अंत अच्छा करते हैं… क्योंकि हम ऐसे ही हैं।” फिर जो हुआ, वो जादू था। टीम बदली नहीं, बल्कि जागी। स्मृति की टाइमिंग, हरमनप्रीत का जोश, दीप्ति की स्थिरता, शफाली की बेख़ौफ़ी सब एक अमोल धागे में बंध गए। वो धागा था उनके कोच के विश्वास का। और जब भारत ने फाइनल में दक्षिण अफ्रीका को हराया, तो पूरा स्टेडियम गूंज उठा। कैमरे खिलाड़ियों के पीछे दौड़े, पर अगर आपने ध्यान से देखा होता तो डगआउट के किनारे एक शख़्स खड़ा था, बाँहें मोड़े, आँखें भीगीं, होंठों पर हल्की सी मुस्कान। उसने ज़िंदगी भर इंतज़ार किया, शायद खेलने के लिए नहीं पर यकीन दिलाने के लिए। उसने कभी नीली जर्सी नहीं पहनी थी पर उस नीली जर्सी को आज फिर इज़्ज़त दिलाई। उसका नाम? अमोल मजूमदार। वो लड़का जो हमेशा इंतज़ार करता रहा और वो आदमी, जिसने आख़िरकार वक़्त को इंतज़ार करवाया।
