The variation in cat personalities is fascinating and extreme. I’m pretty sure it exceeds that that of any other creature except humans. I also suspect it’s why cats are so polarizing—it takes patience to understand each cat on its own terms. You have to be interested enough, and willing to step out of yourself. I find it fascinating and I find them enchanting. I don’t like psychotic cats, which aren’t uncommon. But I easily accept ones that are a bit neurotic, which 98% of them are to one extent or another. Just like people, and for the same reason: their developmental environments are chaotic and mostly incoherent. And cats are exquisitely sensitive to early experience, again, just like people. It’s also interesting to interact with people who really appreciate cats. They are often insightful and don’t lack for compassion and decency. And to be completely frank, I understand “crazy cat ladies” more than I’m supposed to. If your life lacks for meaning, love and intrigue, you can fill your life with cats and solve that problem. I’m not in that situation, but if I was, it would be the obvious choice. (Except the lady part. I’m sticking with the gender I was assigned). In the interest of full pet disclosure, I also love dogs, but for very different reasons. You can do cool stuff with your dog, which is glorious. Such a gift. But for hanging out at home, cats are the bomb.

A really good cat with a really good owner is a very special thing.
