No. Five states offer a driver license that also substitutes for a passport card for the purposes of border crossings at ports of entry on land and sea. All of them are border states with Canada. It's called the Enhanced ID, not to be confused with the regular REAL ID. All states offer the REAL ID and citizenship status IS indicated by the supporting documents submitted into record together with all other private information contained in the license holder's file, including status categories and related endorsements for CDL holders. I know what I'm talking about here. I have a state issued ID that conforms not only to the REAL ID Act, it also complies with 49 U.S.C. 31302 and I can definitely tell you just how much information is in the backend of a driver license that most people don't realize or ever think about. Your elections clerk has access to the private records contained in your driver license, and there's more information, including the citizenship records, that's not printed on your physical license. If your REAL ID was issued based on proof of citizenship when it was issued, it indicates citizenship, and your elections clerk will have access to it to verify your voter registration. Don't get wrapped up in the politics. Life isn't that bad.

Under the SAVE Act, you cannot use your driver's license to register to vote. Republicans want you to buy a passport instead. If you can afford one. This is a modern-day poll tax.

The flag in the upper right hand corner indicates that it's suitable as a substitute for a passport card, valid for border and ocean crossings with Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean states. ALL states issue REAL ID and ALL states scan and record the birth certificates or passports or whatever as an integral part of the driver license record and file. If your REAL ID file record contains the proofs of citizenship, your REAL ID indicates whether or not your are a citizen. That information IS integrated with your driver license record. It's integral with your record. There's a lot of misinformation, people assuming that the Enhanced ID is the only "Real ID" issued by states that indicates citizenship. It's not. There is a LOT of licensing and identity information in the backend of your license record and not all of it is distinguishable by looking at your physical ID. Any commercial vehicle license holder can tell you this, and your elections clerk can explain it to you just as well. Your clerk has access to the backend records of your driver license and they do know if it indicates citizenship or not. The Act doesn't require an Enhanced ID, otherwise it would have named the Enhanced ID. It allows a REAL ID that's why the Act refers to the REAL ID not the Enhanced ID. A REAL ID that indicates citizenship (a field indicator in the database is enough) is valid for voter registration.

@cturnbull1968 Note, the post says "every voter". They are impying that if 200 m or so people all had to get a passport. The post is being intentionally misleading. Also, the act allows for other forms of ID.

If every American voter, without a passport, decided to get a passport, as their primary form of ID, it would take 5 years to fill the requests. But Republicans want this to be in effect before the midterms. They know this, of course, so it’s obvious voter suppression.

But what kind of ID, Katie dearest - many of us have the "Real Id" stamped on our driver's license - and yet we are supposed to get a passport if our license does not match our birth certificate and our current status if we divorced or got remarried - This will disenfranchise 21 million people. That is the real goal. Many will be elderly or hourly workers who cannot afford $250 in photos and fees for a passport.

Non-Enhanced REAL ID driver’s license, state ID, or tribal ID shown in conjunction with a birth certificate (40M lack access to) that matches your last name (which 69M women do not have due to marriage) and other forms of documentation, and which require a cost to obtain (poll tax).
