The US-Iran war, not US-China. Different conflict, different rules. In wartime, a blockade is legally possible. My answer was about peacetime interception of a Chinese-flagged vessel on the high seas,where UNCLOS Article 92 applies and China is a nuclear-armed permanent UNSC member

@DarrylW92605905 @acorn No, I don't think Trump's ego would cause a war with China! bluster isn't the same as pulling the trigger. The military has brakes, China won't hand him a fight, and his first term proved it. But nobody's 100% sure. Hoping the pros on both sides keep it that way🤞

Both allies do provide significant host-nation support: Japan pays around $1.9 billion annually, and South Korea pays about $1 billion per year under recent agreements. Trump's broader point about burden-sharing is worth discussing, but his claim that they don't help at all overlooks their financial contributions and non-combat support in past U.S.-led coalitions. Whether that's enough is a matter of perspective, not fact.

Trump: The Strait is critical for Japan — they get about 93% of their oil through it. South Korea gets roughly 45%. Yet these countries haven’t really helped us. I ask them: are you going to help? We have about 45,000 U.S. troops in Japan and about 50,000 in South Korea. We guard them and protect them. But when we ask for a little help in return, they don’t help us.
