If players are skipping your story, it's not a "video game" problem. It's a writing problem.
Gamers love narrative. In fact, some games' scripts are so massive, they have more words than the LOTR Trilogy:

Baldur's Gate 3 — 2.0M words
Disco Elysium — 1.2M words
Cyberpunk 2077 — 1.0M words
📚 Lord of the Rings trilogy — 481K words
